Pain relief post c-section

After an emergency c-section on the morning of the 28th, I was discharged and home by 6pm on the 29th. I was absolutely fine with this and had been loaded up with all the painkillers: ibuprofen, paracetamol, oromorph. All things I'd taken in hospital.

Now I'm home, I'm really not enjoying taking the morphine. It's 4 x a day and I know that I am tired. Especially from the two nights in hospital, the unexpected birth and the unsettled nights with a newborn. However I really hate the feeling of drowsiness and haziness I'm feeling. I'm nodding off with baby in my arms, typing out nonsense mid text when I don't realise and having the strangest dreams even during ten minute naps.

I've heard a lot of "don't be a hero, take the pain relief" kind of stuff and I totally get it. But did anyone else feel this way? Is it normal? And if I choose to stop taking oromorph 5 days postpartum, will I regret it? Should I request something else?

Request something else. I had Co-dydramol for both my c sections and had no issues both times.

Pain relief aside, you have just had a baby, so you will be exhausted and all over the place. Don’t be hard on yourself for feeling that way.

And congratulations!

My c section was planned not an emergency. But I never took anything more than ibuprofen and paracetamol. Refused everything else as had horrific constipation from codeine after birth of first child.

Just don't take it and see how you get on. After 5 days you'll probably be fine.

Congratulations.
Because I'm allergic to codeine I only had paracetamol!
I did also take ibuprofen if I was very sore.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/07/2024 05:22

You had a baby
You've had surgery
On the same day, which was only 4 days!

You're going to be sore! Be kind to yourself.Be patient!

I don't like how opioids make me feel either. I was ok with Tramadol. Can you ask your mw/hvg for different painkillers?

I only had oramorph in hospital and coped fine with just paracetamol and ibuprofen from leaving hospital after 2 days both times. Try stopping the oramorph and see how you get on.

You don’t need to take it if you don’t need it. I was discharged with paracetomal and dihydrocodeine. The dihydrocodeine made me drowsy and I would have rather had the oramorph which I had in hospital. They all affect people differently.

Just see how you go with paracetamol and ibuprofen and you can always request it’s changed if you’re still in pain.

Is it liquid? I found with the liquid you can adjust the dose to suit, so I'd ween off after surgery.

I hated it as well and dreams are crazy.

I've not heard of anyone getting a prescription for oromorph and taking it 4 x a day for so long after. No wonder you feel how you do. There will be no issue with you stopping or cutting down.

I also only took it once or twice in hospital and despite being a bit sore, paracetamol and ibuprofen was enough. I did stop taking them thinking I was fine and I really wasn't and had to build it back up again so don't do that. I can't remember how long I took them for tho, sorry. Also a crash section.

MrsTeepee · 02/07/2024 23:02

Same, I'm now 10 days pp and haven't taken any oramorph since day 5/6 and even then only if I really needed it. I also cut back because of the drowsiness, it made BF almost impossible! Hopefully you don't need it at all, but I found it quite fast acting when I did need something to tide me over to my next dose of paracetamol/ibuprofen, just don't leave it too long if you do start to struggle.
