Postpartum blood clots/tissue - TMI pic warning

Wondering if anyone, or any midwives on here, can shed some light. I’m 2 weeks post partum. Natural delivery

Had a 750ml bleed straight after birth, bled heavily for the first few days, from days 4-10 blood loss was very stop start, alternating between barely anything to some big gushes. Since then it’s turned very light and brown but I’ve passed 2 large ish clots (size of my thumb) and today something the size of a cherry but very tissue looking.

GP sent me for an ultrasound this afternoon to check for retained placenta. Sonographer said there is no placenta in there, but there are several clots. Said GP would call me next week to discuss report.

has anyone experienced similar? I know retained placenta can be dangerous and require a procedure to remove, but what about clots? Would they just be left to pass naturally? And is it normal to have these? Especially when bleeding has tailed off now?

Very normal to see clots on ultrasound up to 6 weeks PN. They will probably pass in the next few days for you. It does sound as if you may have had some retained placenta and that's what the tissue you passed was but if scan shows all clear now, very reassuring that your body sorted it out itself. Recurrent large (bigger than a golf ball) clots, heavy new bleeding (saturating pads more than 1/HR), or smelly blood loss get back in touch with your maternity team/GP/111 or emergency services if really heavy. Fingers crossed though that you are out of the other side of blood loss and drama!

Clots are quite normal, especially if you've not been very mobile. You will pass them normally. I had one the size of a grapefruit 😫 it was very alarming!

Thanks both, made me feel so much better. so hopefully it’s not a huge issue and will resolve itself.

where I lost a lot of blood after labour I feel like I’m on high alert waiting for it to happen again and it’s been really panicking me x

Just came to post something similar, as I am just passed a clot 14 days pp after a c section!

Called up and was told it's normal but to keep an eye on it and call back if I have more or feel unwell. I've attached a picture as it seems to be a similar looking clot. I've been more active today, wondering if that's why its finally made its way out after a period of cluster feeding this evening.

Hope you had no further issues?
