Passed a clot 11 days PP - normal? TMI pic

I’m 11 days PP

Bleeding has been quite minimal compared to my previous babies, pads have pretty much been clear since about day 6 but still have red blood when I wipe. Saturday eve I got out of the shower and had a little gush of blood, enough to run down my leg onto the floor. But this bleeding had stopped within 5 mins of it starting.

this morning about an hour after waking up I went to the toilet and felt something slide out. It was a big long clot (probably about 1cm wide, 4cm long) couple of drops of fresh blood on my pad after and now back to just blood when I wipe.

I lost a lot of blood after delivery which really frightened me and have felt paranoid about bleeding since so this coming out this morning has left me terrified.

spoke to gp who said I am likely bleeding/clotting because I am severely anaemic. Spoke to post natal midwives who said they had never heard of anaemia being a cause of bleeding, but said that as I’m over 10 days PP I no longer come under them and if I pass anymore I should contact gp or go to a&e.

im just so worried and feel like nobody wants to know. Just looking for opinions on here of if this is normal or a cause to be concerned.

have very mild intermittent period type cramps but other than that no pain or no signs of infection.

Did you have meds for bleeding during birth? I had this with my last two babies after meds to make me clot because I bleed out after Labour x

HcbSS · 17/06/2024 17:51

Please go and be seen OP. You might have retained afterbirth and if you do it could cause sepsis.
Even if they send you away and say it’s nothing at least you will know.

Nosejug · 17/06/2024 17:52

I haven't given birth but I've passed huge clots like that and I needed urgent medical attention (but I was constantly bleeding after the first). Call 111 right away and ask their advice. Maybe it's totally normal and they'll tell you to monitor it but that clot picture gave me flashbacks of an emergency situation. Good luck op.x

PeanutCat1 · 17/06/2024 18:28

Important to get checked out OP, please don't delay. For what it's worth, I had something similar and had an internal ultrasound to check no retained products. They believed it was a womb infection ( can't remember medical name) following the birth so I was given antibiotics and all was fine.

I was put on the oxcitcin drip after labour to contract my womb quickly to stop any further bleeding. That’s all x

Thanks all. Spoke to gp who has done a referral for ultrasound. Said it may be a few weeks wait though.
then spoke to post natal who told me that because I’m over 10 days PP I’m now not under them and if I pass another clot or have very heavy bleeding I either need to go to GP or go to A&E

Feeling so unsupported!

I’ve not bled, other than a bit when I wipe, since I passed this almost 12 hours ago. I have the health visitor coming in the morning so I will show her the picture and see what she’s thinks I’m best off doing. I really don’t want to end up sitting in A&E for hours with my baby

Can I ask what yours was and what the treatment you received for it was?

Just not really sure where I should go, seems too non emergency for a&e, post natal don’t want to know now I’m over 10 days PP and GP over the phone didn’t sound concerned at all!

@Ismo456 I'll tell you but keep in mind it was different circumstances, I don't want to cause you fright.

I'd had a lletz procedure on my cervix and two weeks later passed a huge clot. After calling 111 I was told to go to a&e. It turned out an artery had burst on my cervix which is I now know a very vascular area. The dr says he must have cut it when performing the surgery two weeks before. (I ended up losing roughly 2.5 litres and having multiple blood transfusions).

I mean to say, it was very very serious, but it came on very quickly and had a different set of circumstances to yours. I just wanted to make sure you had called 111.

Will be thinking of you pal, rest up and your body will heal itself. (They fixed my by basically packing my with bandages and my body did the actual repairing, which your body is doing right now).

Oh goodness that sounds awful. Glad you recovered. How scary x

I would never normally advise A&E but here I would. Please don’t ignore a major infection risk. Your baby and older children need you healthy. Even if they send you away with a bit of a flea in your ear, at least you would know.
Read @Nosejug’s story - it’s extreme but it happens. We women can go through hell!

I have had something similar but I am nearly 3 weeks PP, did you manage to find the cause? Was everything ok?

Hello - hope you’re ok

i ended up not going to a&e after this clot, but I did end up passing another few large ones a week or so after this happened which terrified me and go sent me straight to a&e. I had a swab of cervix taken to check for infection (which the hospital then lost 😡) and was referred for a scan a couple of days after which just showed a lot of clots in my womb that needed to disperse. i was fine after this and it didn’t happen again, but I believe the clots I had passed in the lead up to this were definitely retained placenta, they were more fleshy than a blood clot, you couldn’t break them apart.

my advice would be to go to a&e if you’re unsure, or maybe speak to 111? I know it’s hospital is the last place you want to be post partum but I really think it’s not worth the risk of leaving it. Postpartum care is shocking and I think you need to really advocate for yourself xx
