3rd degree tear - still having issues after 2 years

I had a 3rd degree tear (3a) in July 2022. Everything has healed ok ish, I have no issues with continence, though if I cough or sneeze I can't always hold wind. I've done loads of pelvic floor exercises and seen a women's physio but it hasn't improved.

I was seen in the perineal clinic at 12 weeks post partum and the midwife who examined me said I'd healed beautifully but the scar tissue on my perineum/at the entrance to my vagina was very thick and needed a lot of massage.

But nearly 2 years on and sex is still painful where I tore. It doesn't bleed, but if I look at it afterwards, it looks as if I have a tiny split in my skin that is open. It goes/heals if I don't have sex for a bit but then it usually comes back when I have sex again.

Obviously I know this isn't normal. I was referred to gynae by my GP and I have an appointment next month, just wondering if anyone who has been through similar can give me any idea of what to expect?

I am really very reluctant for any sort of surgical intervention as I feel like I've been messed with enough after giving birth and whilst I don't suffer with any incontinence or pain on a day to day basis I don't want to take any risks that might change that. Thanks x

Ah man that’s shit. I haven’t had that exact problem but 3C tear and still continence issues 9 years later. Just sending solidarity! Hopefully doc will sort you.

@BingoMarieHeeler oh, poor you, 9 years! I'm so sorry. It's so shit, isn't it? Sounds naive now but before I gave birth I had no idea there could be such long lasting problems from it. We really want to TTC again but it is hard to increase the frequency we have sex when I keep having to wait for the pain to go away before we can go again 😔
