UTI Nightmare

Hi All,

Looking for those with a similar experience or any help with my situation. I have had a UTI for a month.

2 weeks postpartum I came down with a UTI. I was prescribed Amoxicillin for five days and it didn’t do anything. I was then prescribed Pivmecillinam for 5 days which also didn’t work, so my doctor told me to come off them and they would do a urine culture to determine the bacteria causing it.

When the results came back, it showed as ecoli and that Pivmecillinam was sensitive to it, so she aksed me to take it for a further 10 days. In that time my symptoms worsened and I felt like no one was listening to me until I got a fever after day 7, and was then prescribed Nitrofurantoin at the Urgent treatment centre.

This was prescribed for 5 days but I had a terrible reaction where it caused heart palpitations, burning up and a lot of fogginess and nausea. It made me extremely anxious and put me into an awful mental state, so I only managed 4 days at the doctors approval as she said all infection looked to has cleared up even though I still had symptoms.

A few days later, I am still having all the UTI symptoms and had another urine dip, it again said I had no infection and urine was sent off to say it also didn’t.

Now another three days later, the symptoms have worsened. I’m constantly on the toilet trying to pee and it just doesn’t feel like it has gone at all.

I’m terrified of it turning into something sinister whilst I wait for it to show up again on a urine dip so I can try another medication. In addition, I’m a new mum so I feel like this is taking up so much time to resolve it’s really effecting me as I just want to be well and enjoy time with my son.

I feel like I’ll never get rid of it and be stuck in this circle forever or worse end up in hospital with sepsis or a kidney infection.

Has anyone experience a similar situation?

TIA

I had one for 10 weeks during my last pregnancy. I had numerous courses of nitrofurantoin and it kept coming back. In the end I got referred to a Urologist who prescribed a 4 week course of cefalexin which finally shifted it.
