WHERE did my waters go??

This has happened twice now: I go for 41 week appointment at the hospital, get scanned and the midwife tells me that I have virtually no waters and that I need to come in for an induction the next day. When the midwife goes to break my waters (the first time to induce labour, the second time while I'm pushing during a spontaneous delivery), nothing happens.
My dd (second baby) had to stay in hospital for 24 hours to be observed for infection because I didn't know when my waters had gone. The midwives were pretty incredulous - 'what you didn't even feel a trickle?' And I felt a bit foolish?
So what happens? Has anyone had a similar experience?

yes with DD2...although did feel something about 3 weeks earlier!!Thought I'd had a little accident but didn't feel like I needed a wee or anything. When DD2 was born the midwife said I had no waters and I and babe were monitored for 24 hours. Can't be sure whether 3 weeks earlier waters had broken....otherwise I felt nothing. Bit strange isn't it?
