Postpartum urethra discomfort

I’m at my wits end with an ongoing issue with my urethra and I wonder if anyone has had a similar experience?

Around 2 weeks postpartum I started to feel some pain in my urethra, partially after I had finished peeing and then some throbbing at night. I also had some blood and discharge and after visiting the doctor who told me I had an infection I started a round of antibiotics. I had a vaginal birth and a catheter as I had to be cut slightly to help baby out, but all my stiches have healed perfectly.

After the 1st round of antibiotics, I was still getting the pain so I went back and was put on a new antibiotic. After 5 days I was still
in pain and feeling run down / hot and unwell, so my doctor told me to come off the antibiotic for 3 days do a urine sample and she would send it off to be tested.
In that time I felt so unwell and the pain was really bad after each pee, so when I went back with the urine sample they told me to continue with the previous antibiotic until
my test results came back. She also tested my urine again and said that there were now no white blood cells in the urine and only
protein so it appears to have got better…

The only problem is it doesn’t feel better. The pain is so bad after I pee and I feel really worried it’s never gonna get resolved / go away and that the GP isn’t taking me seriously.

Has anyone experienced anything similar
Postpartum? I literally have no
other uti symptoms apart from pain after peeing.

TIA

I am 8 weeks pp and I had a vaginal birth, episiotomy and a catheter, I experienced the same thing around 2 weeks pp it can be down to bruising I was told, internal bruising I'm no expert of course but mine stopped hurting around 4 weeks pp, I had the same symptoms and awful throbbing the pain got worse when I needed a wee and after/during weeing. It did get better for me though! I don't suffer any pain anymore. However can have caused some damage to your urethra, but that's quite rare could just be the bruising and slight swelling which is normal to experience a couple weeks after! Hope you heal soon op and congratulations on the birth of your baby! 🧡

Hello! I'm 5 weeks PP, had an episiotomy and catheter and suffering from the same pain!
I actually came here to seek advice and happened to find your post!
It's a horrible sensation going to the loo, I'm hoping it eases up ASAP! Haven't spoken to GP about it but will mention at my six week follow up.

Hope you heal soon!

@mkwar and @msp2023 thanks for responding! Sorry to be TMI but is your pain specifically after you’ve been to the toilet?

did either of you manage to find out why it happens a couple of weeks after Labour?

TIA! x

Yes!! I only really get it whilst/after peeing. I have to apply pressure with tissue as quickly as possible to try and stop the pain.

I'm not sure about why it's delayed, planning to ask HV at my six week check up next week. I can't find much helpful information online either.

I'll update after my appt if you would like! Hope the pain resolves for us all soon. I dread going to the loo!

Yes, mine is when during and after and I also got a horrible ache there when I needed to go pee, mine has now fully resolved and I hope you both recover quickly too! Xx

Mine was from there going to higher up (as in clit area). When I looked with a mirror, it was all purple from bruising. The pain always shot upwards, throbbed and ached for a good month or so. I hated it. I had a second degree tear but no pain from there or the stitches whatsoever downwards. Only upwards. The weirdest and most unsettling pain I've ever had. I was so relieved when it stopped.
I had an in and out catheter done during labour but I don't think that could have bruised upwards so badly. I had an epidural in place at the time.

@msp2023 yes that would be grey if you don’t mind! I don’t seem to be getting much info from my doctors and they seem less interested now the infection has significantly lessened! Appreciate you taking the time to reply. Hope it resolves for you soon too! x

@homezookeeper thanks for sharing and that’s so interesting! Can I ask how long you had the pain for? TIA x

@msp2023 hey thought I just update you that they found a bacteria in my sample and called me today to stay on antibiotics! Might be worth ruling out an UTI for you? Just as it’s similar pain etc. Good luck with everything!
