Woken up with cold days before c section

I am due to have an elective section on Tuesday to deliver my twins but have woken up today loaded with the cold and a sore throat. Can anyone tell me if they’ve been in this situation before or any health care staff that can tell me what would normally happen in this situation? I have my pre op assessment in the morning so will speak to them then, but I googled it and a lot on online saying they might postpone the surgery which could be a nightmare as I have family that have taken time off work to travel to stay with me to help me in the week of the twins arrival and they’re already here. My other worry is the pain I’ll be feeling if the surgery goes ahead and I’m sneezing and coughing afterwards! Also if anyone has any idea of pregnancy friendly cold remedies please let me know. So far have been drinking orange juice and hot water with honey and lemon. Planning to sleep with onions in my socks tonight out of pure desperation! :( TIA

I had a cold when I had my c section, still went ahead. Was v sore when I coughed and had to hold my wound. Get some fisherman’s friends to calm the coughing down.

I feel for you, I worried about sneezing after a section. I didn’t get a cold in the end. I did get a covid test before mine and I was told c section would still go ahead even if positive.

I assume the only reason they would consider cancelling would be in case there was an increased risk of infection due to your body being under the weather? Is this what you’re thinking as well?

every day they delay they risk you going into actual labour so I don’t think they’d be keen to postpone too much.

put your head over a steaming bowl of boiling water and towel over your head maybe?

I had a horrible cold before my c section last October but it was honestly fine, just be careful coughing x

Probably worth doing a covid test (esp before going in for preassessment). Wouldn’t normally postpone the surgery for either a cold/covid.

I had terrible hay-fever when I had my c-section (also not ideal when my waters were leaking and soaked myself everytime I sneezed!) It wasn't fun but like others have said, hold your wound and I also tried to bend slightly as I found that eased the pain a little during a sneeze!

All the best!!

Thanks everyone - probably should’ve said I’ve done 3 lateral flows and all negative so do think it’s just a cold! Currently lying in bed with onions in my socks (yuck!), a cup of hot water, honey and lemon and have just steamed my face over hot water so hopefully it’ll all do the trick before Tuesday. Thank you for your advice reg holding the wound and a towel and really appreciate your well wishes 🙂

Yes you don't want to cough or sneeze! If you can push it back a couple of days I would

Had a cold when I had one with ds1, used to hold a pillow against my scar when I coughed. No idea if it helped but I read it somewhere.

If you can get some, Boots dual defence nasal spray may lower your viral load and shorten length of illness. Wishing you lots of luck with the c section, hope all goes well.

There’s an old wives tale that flu and cold like symptoms are a sign of Labour. So fingers crossed for that, but if not…

They will postpone if you are really unwell and they have any concerns about breathing, but they will also not just postpone for a heavy cold. Even if they postpone, it’s not going to be for a long period (they might suggest you say come in Wednesday or Thursday).

So my advice rest up tomorrow. Lots of fluids. Hot tea and lemon.
