Did you / do you have a playlist for during labour / birth?

If so, what's on it?

ludovico einaudi islands album. The theatre staff commented on how lovely and relaxing it was I just love it so much

bakewellbride · 03/09/2023 19:36

With my second I had the Jagged Little Pill album on repeat!

I just used the playlist I had for every day listening. An eclectic mix of genres and eras. Spanning from ABBA to The Zutons, it's a 40 hour long mega compilation of all the songs I love.

I figured it might help with pain if I knew the songs well and could sing along. Focussing on the words instead of the pain sort of thing. In the end it didn't matter. Turns out I turn inward while in labour. I know the music was on, because I put it on, but once the drip was up and contractions started I was no longer listening. I also forgot to ask to put music on in theatre with my second (emergency C-section), and no-one asked. But then it was 2am and the staff (my colleagues) were as tired as we were. They'd had back to back cases that night from the moment they had started, and I'd had 14 hours of drip labour. So everyone was a little bit fuzzy.

Wasn't offered the option in my hospital 🙁 but Fleetwood Mac was playing on the radio when I went into a room for forceps.

If anyone had faffed about with music while I was in labour I’d not have been responsible for my actions. But I’m very noise sensitive and jumpy at the best of times. I can really imagine some form of white noise type thing might help but the clashing of the music, the beeping of the monitors if you’re on them and general background noise (other women screaming, you screaming, your partner trying to read you funny bits from Twitter (yes mine actually did)) might get on your nerves a bit. If you think music might help, seriously consider earphones (in ear type) as it helps if you just need to be in your own space (and more so on the PN ward).

Christ! Which one? Go your Own Way? Landslide? You make Loving Fun?

Dyra · 03/09/2023 21:30

I'm going with The Chain.

MayMi · 03/09/2023 21:31

Sade

PinkPlantCase · 03/09/2023 21:34

I don’t think I listened to any for my first. This time if I fancy it I quite like the Hymns of Spirit album by Beautiful Chorus. I don’t know if it was written for the purpose but it does seem pretty birthy.

Please prepare me is my current favourite from there.

NancyMaloni · 03/09/2023 21:37

My son was born to oh sole mio sang by Pavarotti, it was perfect!
I mostly had Christmas songs on (it was that sort of time) but I am delighted that it was oh sole mio!

WonkyBricks · 03/09/2023 21:38

I had a lovely one I'd spent the majority of my pregnancy listening to in the bath, my DH only remembered to put it on for the last hour or so of labour. At that time I really didn't care, but it was something for him to do 🤣

I had some Michele Stodart, Vance Joy, Paper Aeroplanes, Ben Howard. All folky, acousticy type songs.

Haha, I was so out of it by that point I can hardly remember it.

DH said it was - Everywhere. Followed by Dolly Parton - Islands in the stream then Van Morrison - Into the mystic. Wasn't my choice but not mad about it at all 😆

Ooh I actually love the tracks I've heard of his so that's a good shout.

Coincidentally I'd just added this album to my favourites playlist before making this thread.

Yeah I never had a playlist / music with my first but thought maybe it would be worth a try second time round.

I get no phone signal at my hospital though so needs to be downloaded ready to try if I'm going to.

I share my spotify with my 8yr old though so can't just put my "favourites" or random on as I'll be invaded by Disney, descendants and Princess songs!

That's the one that came to mind for me too.

To be fair, I'd probably put it on mine 😄

I made a playlist of songs I knew well and that I would usually put on as background noise anyway. My theory was that if I knew it then Baby would know it and we'd both feel chilled etc.

DH definitely put the playlist on for me. I remember it going in the early stages when the midwives were playing with the drip levels etc.

I also remember being almost at pushing at yelling at DH to skip various songs and put the playlist back to the beginning because Amazon Music had gone rogue.

But I also have no idea if it was still going/what was playing when DS was actually born. DH says it actually spontaneously cut off but I have no memory whatsoever. And this was only last week!

DrJump · 04/09/2023 01:51

I had lots of songs that would make me either dance or laugh. This is how we do it by Montel Jordan, Pink by Janelle Monae, let me blow your Mind by Eve, plus some pick me up stuff from Aretha, Emillee Sandee.
I was thinking I would have a longish induction and wanted some fun stuff. In the end it was a crazy fast labour and I didn't listen to much. I had played lots of the tunes while cleaning the house while pregnant and stuff and those song seamed to calm DD post birth.

addler · 04/09/2023 08:56

Disclaimer- not my playlist, I'm just a fan!

Dyra · 04/09/2023 15:25

Love it. 😂

sleepymama3 · 06/09/2023 11:52

I had a playlist of songs that I like, ranging from show tunes to The Final Countdown! I listened to the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack during labour, which was gorgeous

BlueRabbitYellow · 06/09/2023 12:04

I just had the beeping of machines and the kind words of the anaesthetist during my emergency c section! I wish you all the best though OP.
