Small fluid leak ? waters breaking

Last Saturday evening I had a small leak of fluid (10-20mls) when drying myself after a shower. MW said to keep an eye on it but it could have been urine . Have had no more since. Has this happened to anyone else and if so did it mean anything?

How many weeks are you?

Lulumama · 29/02/2008 17:09

if it has stopped, then it was either wee or a hindwater leak, neither of which mean labour is about to start! it is possible it was urine.....

if your waters broke, it would be an awful lot more than 10 - 20 mls.. but you can have a leak that will reseal itself and is not significant

I had this and was admitted as i was twins and so they check everything. i knew it wasn't urine because i've never had a leak and it was clear not yellow. I went into labour 3 days later and what they said had happened was that twin one's forewaters broke and then her head slipped down and stopped anything else happening - i don't know if that sounds right or not, but they did have to turn her head with foreceps before i pushed her out.

the only thingthat would worry me is there's an increased risk of infection if waters have broken- so no swimming, shower rather than bath, no sex.
hope this helps -i'm not an expert!

luckylady74 · 29/02/2008 17:16

now why did nobody say that to me lulumama? they only said the hind (i assume i got that mixed up with fore) waters thing and the head-in passing when the twins were born.

novice1 hope you listen to lulu - i know nothing!

Really helpful thanks.

I am 32 wks. I am pretty sure it wasn't wee but can't be 100%

Can you smell the towel to be sure?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 29/02/2008 17:20

Just realised it was last week so forget that last comment.

Lulumama · 29/02/2008 17:21

but that is waht happened to you , luckylady...! so it can happen..

if in doubt, you need to go to the hospital, where the MW can do an examination to see if it was your waters

novice1 · 29/02/2008 17:21

I did try to wipe what I could and have a sniff (TMI!!) but I didn't think it smelled like wee.

well, your waters can smell sweet..and they can be straw coloured
if you are concerned at all you should call the MW back

novice1 · 29/02/2008 17:49

Thanks for all the advice, i am due back at the hospital on Monday, so I'll have a word then.

when i was pregnant, towards the last few weeks i had alot of fluid leaking that i didnt know what it was. i told the midwife and she sent me to hospital to be checked.
it turned out to be discharge and nothing, but to me it felt like alot of fluid coming out.

best to be checked out if you ask me.

Keep an eye on it. My hind water leak happened at 26 weeks - and I carried on until 34 weeks and would have probably gone full term had it not been for a pesky infection! Did mean I was kept a close eye on and a few days in hospital to make sure baby wasn't imminent.

I realised what it was as I'd just been to first NCT class where they said your waters smell sweet and look a bit like barley water....spot on description i'd say!! Have a word with them on Monday - definately.
