C section scar pain in subsequent pregnancy?

babyno5 · 21/02/2008 20:46

I am 22 weeks and starting to feel pain and discomfort around the site of my scar from last c section. Is it normal to feel that this early-I thought if it was going to happen it would be much later on

Any advice?

I had no pain there whatsoever but I don't know if it's normal to have some pain.

I would definitely get it checked out with GP/midwife though in case of scar rupture.

Maybe that should have been uterine rupture?

I felt a lot of discomfort over my scar when pg again. Also, during my subsequent labour, the pain during contractions was centred very much on the scar. I did, however, manage a VBAC, so I don't think pain is necessarily anything sinister, though worth getting it checked out by the doctor.

Everyone that I know has complained of some issue with their scar in subsequent pregnancies. My sister and sil were sore from about 4 months, another friend didn't feel anything until 8 months, and another friend is about 17 weeks and complains that it's itchy. I think it is normal but just confirm with your practitioner to be sure.

no pain in 2nd or third pregnancy despite having 3 c-sections.

Its most likely to be caused by the scar stretching as you start to grow, can give some itchyness and discomfort, or possibly from adhesions from the previous surgery which can be quite painful.

Its not likely to be scar rupture (in fact extremely unlikely) at 22 weeks, but its worth mentioning to your midwife or GP for some reassurance next time you see them.

I asked my doctor about this earlier this week - she said the scar, no matter how recent, shouldn't cause any problems and she has never known of a scar tearing or bleeding during a subsequent pregnancy. I suppose some discomfort as the skin stretches is likely but if it's causing you pain i'd say see your gp.

Thanks guys will get it checked out. I have to say it has itched constantly since I had c section 2 years ago-maddeningly itchy!

I had CS nearly three years ago, am 3 weeks away from second CS. Have had pains in wound (mostly on one side which was more painful originally also) throughout pregnancy, initally I think this was the stretching and more recently the pressure of the weight of the baby etc.
Have had lots of colds etc which haven't helped as coughing has lead to sort of spasms like cramp, quite painful at the time and leaving residual pain once I'm then up and about. Sometimes it's taken my breath away in way it did post-op.
I've mentioned all this to most people (midwives, gp, consultant) I've come across and no-one has seemed overly surprised or concerned!
