First post partum period

My baby is now nearly 8 months old and I’ve just started my first period since before I conceived (ebf). It’s so heavy, I’m saturating pads every couple of hours. I used to have really light periods so I’m hoping this is a one off because it’s my first period in a year and a half.

Does anyone remember if their first post partum period was a lot heavier than subsequent periods? Not sure I can cope with this every month 😭

I can't remember if I'm honest but if they do continue to be heavy I really can recommend the Mirena Coil Wink

Yes, mine was dreadful, about 9 months post partum and horrific mood swings to match. Next one was a definite improvement.

My first one was awful too @Sleeepdeprived 😥 like you, I had lighter periods before so wasn’t expecting it! My next one was definitely an improvement but still really heavy compared to what they were before unfortunately! That was 2.5 years ago and they’re still pretty much the same now 😔

Thank you all. Hoping the next one is a lot lighter. I feel so sorry for women with really heavy periods - it’s literally stopping me living my life when I’ve never had to worry about it before.

Thats good to know about the coil @SiouxsieSiouxStiletto. I’m making an appointment for the coil soon and was thinking about the copper coil but if the Mirena helps with periods I might go for that one

Yeah, mine got heavier after having my first child and they didn't much improve I'm afraid. On the plus side, they no longer hurt!

My first period was fine. My second period post partum was horrendous! Then the third was fine again. I also get really painful ovulation pains now.

Hi @Sleeepdeprived

I know this is a few months old but did yours get any better please? My ebf baby turned 8 months on Monday and following him having a nasty virus and dropping a few night feeds my period has returned, it’s horrendous! I’m soaking through night time pads in 2-3 hours (including during the night) and this is day 3. Surely it can’t be like this every month!

Hey! The first one was the worst for sure! My periods are still a bit all over the place because I’m still breastfeeding, and they are heavier than they were before I had my baby, but nothing like the first one. it definitely does get better. My first one seemed to go on for ages too so prepare for that and stock up on pads!

@Sleeepdeprived thank you! That’s very helpful to know, I’ll be stocking up in case this goes on a while! I don’t plan on stopping breastfeeding any time soon so noted that they could be a bit erratic for a while!
