The Portland or Guys and St Thomas's hospital?

I have a choice of where I'd like to give birth.... either The Portland or Guys and St. Thomas's

I don't have any experience of either of them, so just wondering if anyone can give me a recommendation or has any information.

thanks,

i have it on good authority that while the portland is nice and hotel-like, their maternal mortality rate is worryingly high.

try john and lizzies up the road. much nicer

(no idea about guys sorry)

St Thomas's every time (no mat services at Guys). Their private wing is lovely and they have NICU, SCBU and ITU should you need it (which I am sure you won't but it's good to know it's there). I agree about the Portland and would not go there for a leg wax, let alone a delivery. Big teaching hospital is the way to go for me.

I would choose Thomas' (had DC2 there on the NHS)

Friends had a scary undiagnosed breech at the Portland

OK, it's 3-Nil to Thomas'...

Anyone else?

thanks!!!

Although I know one person - Anchovy - who had very good experiences at the Portland there are some horror stories. TBH you're mainly in better hands within the NHS, as NHS hospitals deal with so many births so much of the time (and yes I am aware of horror stories in the NHS, a number on MN). I'd go for Guy's.

also isn't it St Thomas's which has the amazingly fabulous birth centre?

hertsnessex · 20/02/2008 22:53

Portland - hmmmmmmm, im not a huge fan.

St Thomas' seems lovely though and my friend had her baby there and liked it.

Just saw this thread and wanted to say I had DD at the portland over Xmas and cannot praise the care I received before, during and after. I had vistors the day after DD was born saying how fabulous I looked and they couldn't believe I'd just given birth simply because I was rested and cared for..They do have ICU units for baby (mine was 3 weeks early and fantastically cared for) and IC for mother's too. It was the best money we ever spent and if we're lucky enough to get pregnant again will def be going back there.

Thanks MM... I appreciate that!

I have signed up for the Private wing of St. Thomas' now, but it's nice to hear a good story from The Portland!
