Opinions on pethidine? Worth having?

Due DC2 next month and would like some kind of pain relief this time. Last time I was sent home at 2cm dilated, got back at 8cm and was told I could only have gas and air at that point, which I found I just couldn't get on with doing!

Thoughts/experiences on pethidine? X

Did absolutely nothing for me, in delivery or after c section. Not for me.

I loved it! Gas and air wasn't cutting it for me so had pethadine and was magic. Didn't make me feel sick (but they also gave me an anti sickness jab at the same time) and I felt like I slept for hours and hours between contractions. I later went on to have an epidural which was also bliss. Very chilled if perhaps a long labour. But no pain. No effect on dd1.

On the other hand, DD2 came so quickly, we only just made it to hospital. No chance for any pain relief.....well they offered gas and air but I was too busy screaming to use it. I actually preferred this birth as got the push sensation which I never had with dd1. And yes it hurt like mad but all over the minute she popped out.
