How long were you in for after 1st baby?

I realise this will prob depend on complications/no complications/CS etc but I have Group B Strep so the MW said I will prob have to stay in with the baby for around 3 days. This is my 1st baby and people are giving differing opinions on this as I know a few other girls who have had GBS and were only in for a day.

How long were you all in for with your first?

Thanks for feedback - just curious xxx

I had a homebirth, so not not in hosp at all... or so you'd think. Unfortunately, postnatal support for bf was pretty poor and we ended up being admitted to hospital when DS was 6 days old as he was sleepy, jaundiced and still losing weight . We were in for 3 days. After 24 hrs he came out of the incubator and I was desperate to go home.

12 hours after forceps delivery (minutes away from emergency C-section). Would have been longer as was supposed to wait until I had my catheter removed, but I accidentally got out of bed the wrong side... and hence removed it myself.

First birth I was in for 3 days and I loved every minute of it.

micegg · 18/02/2008 21:05

28 hours after DD was born. Discharged myself as I hated the 4 bedded ward and the midwives were completely unhelpful so I saw no point in me being there. Got home at 11 PM. Fed DD some FM (she wouldnt latch on and no one would help but they also didnt want to me to bottle feed ), she promptly stopped crying and she slept peacefully on my chest for the rest of the night. Bliss.

Term baby

No complications, drugs or anaesthetics.

Vaginal birth

I left on the same day I gave birth

magHOOVERlia74 · 18/02/2008 21:10

Induced at 6.30am, had dd1 at 9am, home at 4pm

Of course after that I had more and realised staying in was actually ok

By the 5th baby they had to kick me out

DiscoDizzy · 18/02/2008 21:11

I had GBS with both mine and was home the next day.

AnnainNZ · 19/02/2008 02:47

In for 5 days after em c/s.

Home for 48 hours then readmitted as had infection in my c/s scar. In for a further 5 days, 4 of them on intravenous antibiotics every 6 hours.

Was pretty keen to get out by the 10th day. Had my own room and bathroom though and staff nice (if busy) so could have been worse

juule glad it's not just me - i LOVED being in the hospital, didn't want to come home it was so nice & straightforward with help when you needed it and plenty of chance to rest. once home the visitors/housework/unsettled nights start...yuk! stay as long as you can!

Babysamrocks · 19/02/2008 09:29

I stayed in for four nights after my ds was born. I had hoped to be discharged earlier but i had to have a blood transfusion.
Hope everything goes ok for you.

3 days and it was IMO great ( as no daily home visits here). Day 1 on cloud 9. Day 2 pain set in( stitches and bruising) Day 3 ready to go home.

Tom was 6 days late, waters broke at 5am and he was finally evicted at 9.22am on a wednesday. I tore quite bad though. Had difficultied BF at first, but they were helpful. 5pm on the friday, a midwife comes over and asks if I wanted to go home and apologised for forgetting about me, lol. Finally got discharged at 9:30pm. I wanted to go home as I hadn't been sleeping too well and Tom preferred to sleep on me at the time, which was not ideal on a hospital bed! I cried when I got home (was still living at my parents). I hated being left on my own! The food wasn't bad. Had fish and chips one evening, yummy!

Pinkchampagne · 19/02/2008 11:03

Was in hospital for 2 nights after having DS1. I had an epidural while giving birth so couldn't come home straight away.

3catstoo · 19/02/2008 11:16

I was in for 6 hours after all 3. 6 hours is supposed to be the min stay after giving birth.

No complications made it an option.

Homebirth was not an option with a heart murmor and low iron levels.

Would push for a homebirth next time, if there is a next time.

BettySpaghetti · 19/02/2008 11:20

I had to stay in 6 days with DD which I hated.

She was a straightforward birth but had jaundice so was very sleepy and not feeding at all well. As she was born 2.5 wks early and weighed only 6lb 3oz (dropped to below 6lb ) they wanted me to stay in while they monitored her feeding and jaundice.

2littlemonkeys · 19/02/2008 11:39

i was in for 5 days with dd1 as she was having light theropy, and with dd2 i was determined to go so she was born 10.14pm on the 23rd and i was shopping in toys r us by dinner 24th lol

ArchiesMama · 19/02/2008 12:47

StrepB was confirmed after DS was born, so we had to stay for 5 days and he had IV anti-biotics. But if they already know you have it, they should be able to give you anti-biotics during labour and head off the need to treat your baby. But I guess there will be some extra checking. Ask your mw about all the circumstances about treating StrepB. My waters had been leaking for more than 48 hours before DS was born, and it was during all that prolongued labour that they realised the duration and swabbed for StrepB. I discovered later that had Ds been born within a certain time limit after the leaking started, he would not have had to have IV anti-biotics. I would definitley have asked for accelaration of labour rather than my drawn out, natural, water-birth labour had i known that it would make the difference between DS on IV a-bs and 5 days in hospital.

Had it not been for that, I would have been off home before lunch (baby born early hours of morning) had it been up to me.

Blu · 19/02/2008 12:58

Oh yes - the possibility of jaundice. Even puting your baby in the sunshine coming in through the window can help head off jaundice, so do that as much as you can.

BITCAT · 19/02/2008 13:00

About 2days, they wanted me to stay but i wanted to get in my own bed and into my own routine and i had experience with babies, as i had 6 brothers n sisters younger than me!!

cadelaide · 19/02/2008 13:07

Like happynappies I had a lovely holiday in a mw-led unit.I was encouraged to stay as they are threatened with closure and so they want to keep the figures up to prove a need.
I was in for 5 days, lovely food, nice clean environment and I was left alone as it was dc3 and they figured i could manage. They would have helped willingly though if I'd asked, they did like taking him off for a cuddle so I could eat in peace.
God, I loved it, why would I want to go home with care like that?
Tea and biscuits several times a day, dirty plates whisked away, piles of magazines.
I remember dozing one day with him on my tummy, shaft of sunlight through the curtains, hearing pigeons cooing and children's laughter outside.
I suppose I should say I missed dp and dcs

justnally · 19/02/2008 13:09

My friend with GBS was in hospital for a week with her first.

coastalmum · 19/02/2008 13:10

All 4dc had to go in incubator for 24hrs as very cold. 'allowed' home after that, except that the time between being told your ok to go home and the paperwork actually being completed is a lifetime, it once took them 33hrs to complete paperwork.

This time midwife who saw me antenatally told me to just tell them when I was leaving, and leave with or without paperwork signed as community midwife can collect paperwork later in the day. We did just that told mw on duty that I was leaving at 8am next morning, and I did even tho paed exam not done (gp did it later that day). Hosp mw weren't very happy, GP wa sover the moon to get to play with such a little babe.

tasjaSAmuminUK · 19/02/2008 13:11

I was in hospital for 16 days. 11 days with pre-eclampsia and then 5 days after DD was born - she had jaundice (sp?)
