Induction day

So I had an appointment with the midwife on Thursday and she tried to do a sweep. My cervix was 1cm, almost 2cm.

I have an induction today due to being over due. Can anyone who has had an induction before tell me in their experience, that if they were already starting to dilate previously, was the induction a bit more straight forward/quicker? I know everyone is so different and that my birth will be how it will be, just interested to know!

I was about 1cm when I was induced the second time.
Everything was straight forward, labour was started with the first pessary. I must have been ready.
Second time, took until the third try of the gel to get things going, but once they did, labour was quite quick considering.
Good luck!

@Timetonamechangeithink thank you so much for the quick response! And for the luck! Pray for me 🤣🙈

i waa induced with my second. I was 2cm dialated when i went in at 38 weeks, they broke my waters and my labour started a couple of hours later, i did have to go for walks and the birthing ball helped bring on the labour as it initially didnt go as quick as they liked.

i didn’t need the drip as labour progressed well. It was all very positive and straightforward. Overall labour was 4 hours

hope it all goes well for you

Mumtobe2023 · 04/02/2023 08:11

@Covetthee that sounds brilliant 👏 I bet you were very pleased with that! Thank you for the reply! I need go stop worrying so much and go with the flow! X

I was 1cm but cervix still high when I was induced with my second. Pessary in at 12ish noon and baby arrived at 2230. The pessary kicked in straight away and I went to the MLU into the water pool at about 2030. I couldn’t have asked for better really. Good luck x

I think inductions tend to be more successful and straight forward when the body is already getting ready for labour, dilation has gradually started etc, so it's just a gentle nudge in the right direction.

It can be much harder when the body is absolutely nowhere near ready, say for an induction that is an early one for whatever reason.

Mumtobe2023 · 04/02/2023 08:24

@turrrniiipz yes I can well imagine this would be the case! Let's just hope my body is ready, cos mentally I am more than ready to have this done and have my baby in my arms now 🙈🤣

I won't go into detail about the labour as I had a very traumatic experience (which was down to the reason why I was induced) however I was 2cm on the Sunday when I went in and still didn't give birth until the Friday. Although I wasn't overdue, I was early so I think he just wasn't ready to come out! But I'd pack more than enough just to be sure, especially things that will be comfy and provide you with some distraction

Scalessayeek · 04/02/2023 08:37

I was 1/2cm (39 weeks). They used a gel, then broke my waters (struggled due to me having a high, tilted cervix so it took 15 mins and lots of pain 🫣

Contractions were stop/start but kept slowing down so it was the drip for me. They started me at 10am and I was told I’d be checked after 4 hours then another lot of 4 hours of drip. Contractions were coming in back to back and I kept asking when they would check me to be told not for hours. ( this was about an hour after the drip). I knew the end was coming at about 11.30 as I didn’t want pain relief and was contemplating an epidural (this parts called transition and it’s the last part of active labour).

I was hooked up to monitors but couldn’t sit still with the pain and the cover Midwife (other two ladies had gone for lunch) went to put on monitor on babies head so they could get a trace and surprise surprise I was 10cm!

We were admitted into the ward 1pm Monday and she was born 12.45pm Tuesday. My tip is to pack for 2/3 days and have a secondary bag with more supplies for the car :)

Depends how much you need inducing.

Just gel, absolutely fine.
Gel and waters broken, fine. Both like natural labour (waters broken are a bit uncomfortable, but you have had and air if you want and it's just the discomfort, not the pain)
Gel, waters broken and drip, contractions go hard and can go for a while so be prepared to ask for an epidural (then it's fine!)

Hope you’re getting on okay OP.

I was induced this week with our second. I had a sweep at 40+3 I think it was and was 1cm. Nothing came of that so was booked for balloon induction at 41. Terrified of the idea so went into hospital, told them I wasn’t sure and wanted to delay. They agreed and MW did a sweep. She had me at 2-3cm so a balloon wouldn’t have been needed anyway. Booked for ARM within a few days.

Lost plug/bloody mucous after that but no labour!

Went in on Wednesday just for ARM. Not the most pleasant thing I’ve ever experienced! Told MW I really didn’t want the drip so she kept giving me time. Lots of bouncing on the ball followed by standing up and hip circles with a wide stance which finally lost me a second lot of waters and started tightenings.

Got to the 6 hour mark which is when they can get a bit antsy about wanting to start the drip but examined at 15.30 and found to be 4cm, fully effaced. Only had a few ‘nippy’ contractions before urge to push came. Pushing stage of 6 minutes and DD born at 17.26 with no pain relief.

I had a beautiful spontaneous labour with DS but I’d pick this one as my favourite as I didn’t spend the whole build up to going in, in pain like with DS and it was so quick and controlled.

Wishing you all the best for a lovely birth and newborn cuddles soon!

Update 🩷

So they inserted the propess at 4.30pm. I Started cramping within 10 mins. They are quite uncomfortable and come and go but with no pattern.

They will assess me at 4.30pm tomorrow to see if there is any progress with the cervix 🤞🤞 I hope there will be! Husband went home about an hour ago and i had a little cry but brushed it off! Somehow!

I am now streaming big bang on Netflix on my macbook! 🩷

Hows it going op? :)

Mumtobe2023 · 05/02/2023 16:09

@AutumnScream I am currently 8cm and they reckon I'll be pushing by 7pm 🙈 I'm scared! I managed first 4 hours of contractions with just gas and air! And then I caved and got an epidural and it's bloody fantastic 👏 🤣

halloumi1 · 05/02/2023 18:08

Hope you’re not far off now OP 😊

They told me I’d next be examined at 7.30pm but she was born by 17.26 ha

FT123456 · 05/02/2023 20:28

@Mumtobe2023 ooo so exciting. The epidural is lovely isn't it? Wishing you all the best with your delivery OP

DownInTheDumpster · 05/02/2023 20:44

Good luck OP! Hope baby is here safe let us know!

Mumtobe2023 · 06/02/2023 04:35

Thank you everyone 💓 I was induced at 4pm Saturday 4th and had her by 22.52 Sunday 5th! Ended up in theatre for forceps/vaginal birth because when i tried to push naturally she wouldnt budge as her head god stuck at a weird angle in the birth canal 🙈 i ended up losing 4 pints of blood but she was worth every bit of it! I still look at her and can't believe she's mine 😃🩷
