How often do you really need to change baby's nappy?

I'm due baby 2 soon. With Ds over 3 years ago we changed his nappy after every feed which in the first few weeks was ALL THE TIME. Even then it felt like too often and so I wondered if the wise experienced ladies of mumsnet could give me an idea?
Would every other feed in the night be a good idea? Therefore one of two feeds would just be a feed and in turn a bit easier? unless obviously there's a poo and change that as soon as discovered?
Thank you!

We did every 2-3 hours in day (or poo when she did it/we noticed) and only for poo overnight.

Even from newborn, I never changed baby overnight unless they pooped. Night nappy on around 9-10pm when tiny, changed about 6-7am if not pooped

Daytime approx every 3hrs. Obviously with babies that might be 3hr, 3hr, 15min later poo, 3hr.. etc

Pinchelada · 08/12/2022 19:27

I change my baby's nappy probably every 3-4 hours except if its dirty (more frequently) or overnight (less frequently).

Hugasauras · 08/12/2022 19:30

We were more like 3-4 actually during day thinking about it, with both DC. Neither have ever had nappy rash or any issues in that dept so seemed fine.

Very regular during the day at night only if my child woke up

User0ne · 08/12/2022 19:35

Every couple of hours during the day unless poo. Not overnight (maybe between 10-6) unless poo.

I did 2-3 hours during the day, and none overnight unless they seemed chewed. Changed soiled nappies straight away. No nappy rash or I'd have upped the amount of changes. I know people that changed after every wee and it always seemed a bit excessive.

At newborn we changed her about 2 hours cos she pooped a lot. Nowadays (11 months) she gets changed about every 3-4 hours unless she's poops (about 3 times in average a day mostly in the morning) and then not at all over night.

StressedOutMama7808 · 08/12/2022 19:41

My 3 month old after every nap (5 times a day) unless she did a poo.

Overnight during every wake up which is like twice.

She rarely poos in her sleep.

Kimberz · 08/12/2022 22:17

We change when she has pooped, or if its been a good few hours since last change. The nappy's are good for 12 hours max if no poop

MasterCherry · 08/12/2022 23:22

Nighttime changes for poo only, unless I discovered the nappy was totally soaked through. Daytime changes are almost always provoked by poo as well (4 weeks old). Once poos get less frequent, it'll be every 3-4ish hours.

Libmama · 09/12/2022 07:06

I’m on baby 3 and only change if it feels full. You get more lapse with each baby in my opinion 😂

Gumbo · 09/12/2022 07:17

Depends on the baby I think. DS fed like clockwork every 2 hours for the 1st 5 weeks...and pooed afterwards every single time - so 12 nappy changes a day! Poo = nappy change.

DappledThings · 14/12/2022 09:31

Also only for poo overnight here. When DS1 was tiny he had to be woken to feed and changing him was part of waking him up but that only lasted about a week.
