hi BL a doula is a person who helps and supports a woman before during and after labour. they can help with holistic pain relief ie massage techniques and keeping the atmosphere calm during labour. also they can help support the woman to make sure her decisions during birth are listened to. HTH there are a few doulas who post on here aswell so they will prob answer you a bit better but anywho...

they also help out after you've brought the baby home, with light housework and stuff.

Basically they are everything you could possibly want.

As MrsE says, there are a few on here who can explain what they do better than I can, but they seem like wonderful, fantastic, helpful beings who are just so...

fab

Is it pronounced dooola or dowla? I've often wondered.

fryalot · 25/01/2008 15:03

doola

I have pointed lulumama in this direction.

The other thing I would add is that they cost less than you would think (well less than I thought!)

a doula is a woman , usually one who has had her own children, who offers one to one emotional support to other women, before, during and after labour....

doula uk

tell you more about it

MarsLady · 25/01/2008 15:56

she is to you what you would want your ideal mother to be.

She's your support through pregnancy, labour and beyond.

She does not come between you and your partner but she supports you both!

She doesn't do anything medical or clinical.

She's a constant presence through your labour/birth.

Lulumama · 25/01/2008 15:57

yeah, what mars says

biglips · 25/01/2008 18:55
