Planned section for the 19th possible bank holiday

Hello I know this may sound stupid but I've been booked in for my elective section on the 19th will this still go ahead if it's made the bank holiday? I understand emergency surgery still happens but will an elective

I’m going to say on a normal bank holiday then yes because I’ve heard before that the only two days of the year when electives don’t happen (presumably on week days) are Christmas Day and new years day. This is a unique bank holiday though so I’d probably guess it will be shifted to another day to limit it only to essential staff in

Wondering exactly the same thing! Also whether the hospital will be fully staffed (we know we’ll need after care) and we’re going to a central london hospital.

It's really hard to say. In my trust no electives are done on any bank holiday. But the rotas would have been done weeks in advance, so there would be staff scheduled. But then, schools and nurseries will be shut, and public transport affected, so now said staff might not be able to work....

I would tentatively say it will go ahead. It's not like most elective surgery where, while it sucks, a few extra weeks doesn't affect things. With babies, even days matter, and they're not going to stay in forever. It'll involve a lot of staff juggling and shift swapping for those affected. Failing that, try to move it to the Saturday. Failing that, they'll move the entire list to the emergency theatres and work around the emergencies. Either way, it's a massive headache for the managers, and they'll be working hard to find a safe solution.

I’m in the exact same position op. I’m hoping it still goes ahead as we have all childcare organised and changing that would potentially be quite difficult. I’m going to ask my midwife when I see her on Wednesday but it is a bit of a waiting game for now isn’t it. Not what you need really at an anxious time anyway is it?

babystar90 · 11/09/2022 04:18

I doubt it. At my local hospitals, they don’t do planned C sections on bank holidays.

I was meant to have my section on the 19th of April but because it was Easter Monday on the 18th, all the sections from the 18th were rearranged for the 19th. I was then moved to the 20th. Bit annoying because I had childcare arranged for my other child but nothing I could do!

In my trust in Scotland it is only the 8 public holidays that there are no elective sections. Bank holidays they do.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 11/09/2022 06:09

My husband is scheduled to be doing electives on the 19th - his view is that they will go ahead as will be difficult to find new slots.

SGChome20 · 11/09/2022 07:23

@KEG05 which trust is that as I in Scotland?

KEG05 · 11/09/2022 07:51

Lothian 😊. I work at St. John’s. It’s just the 8 public holidays Xmas day Boxing Day. New Year’s Day. The 2nd. good Friday. Easter Sunday. The May holiday and the sept holiday they don’t run the elective list. Aside from that they run mon-fri 😊

SGChome20 · 11/09/2022 09:23

@KEG05 thank you, not my trust but hopefully the same thinking!

pinksquash13 · 11/09/2022 22:31

I'm in the same position. Feel stressed at the thought of the hospital being understaffed. Would anyone working in a hospital feel worried to be in our position? Should I try and move it?

But that is surely the 8 public/bank holidays?

Slightly different from England but you don't run elective on Bank Holidays.

I hope you get it on the 19th but I think there will be a lot of moving around.

SGChome20 · 12/09/2022 07:25

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints a lot of places in Scotland give more PH. I get 12 in my place.

OrangeSmartiesTasteDifferent · 12/09/2022 12:28

Hi everyone, I'm in NW England but also have elective section booked for Monday 19th, I've seen MW this morning who rang and they confirmed it is going ahead. Fingers crossed the same for all of you too! X

DeoForty · 12/09/2022 12:34

I was born by planned section on a Bank Holiday Monday. My mother apparently queried it and they looked quite confused as to how that was an issue.

Medical staff don't tend to take bank holidays, they get TOIL. Unless the circumstances of the bank holiday are different.

pinksquash13 · 14/09/2022 19:12

I had a call today to say mine has been postponed until Wed. Anyone else?

SGChome20 · 14/09/2022 19:32

@pinksquash13 how far along will you be on the Wednesday? I hope you are ok with waiting till then and don’t have childcare issues etc

I got a call from the theatre midwife to book in pre op and she said she’d be very surprised if it was cancelled as they are so busy.

pinksquash13 · 14/09/2022 20:35

I'll be 40+ 4. I've said if I go into labour before then I'll give it a go (EMC with last baby but apparently a good candidate for vbac) so maybe that's why I've been chosen to postpone. I was worried about staffing so not too concerned about the delay. Gives me more time to come up with a name! @SGChome20 Very much hope yours goes ahead Monday. I'd imagine people would have heard by now if it was changing.

SGChome20 · 14/09/2022 20:49

my goodness, so you’d have been 40+1 as scheduled. That seems quite late for an elective. Well fingers crossed all goes well for you either way!

magd2901 · 15/09/2022 12:04

I was due to have an ELCS tomorrow due to restricted foetal growth but have caught a d&v bug from my 3yo. Mine has been delayed until Monday. Not sure if that’s just my trust or because I’m classed as a priority. Very glad about having a few days to recover from this bug anyway!

SGChome20 · 15/09/2022 13:08

I just had a phone call to confirm that my section is definitely going ahead which I’m so relieved about.
