Hi i understand the child birth thing but how does the plecenta get delieved do u just have to push it out like a baby or what and does that part hurt aswell.

It follows the baby. I dont recall being in pain delivering the placenta.

don't they sometimes whack an injection in your thigh to get the placenta out quickly? I'm sure they did that to me both times!

yes they do sometimes ( happened to me aswell!)

i didnt have the injection, pushed placenta out, but not painful after baby! on hormone high then as well.

Both times I wouldn't have been able to tell you that the placenta even came out!

You couldn't care less what is going on down there when you are holding your new born baby for the first time

You can have an injection which is given, into your thigh, just as the baby is delivered,which causes the placenta to come away, and be expelled, you might need to push a bit, and the midwife might gently pull the cord to get it out..... it was not painful for me.
if you have a drug free birth, you might want to have a physiological 3rd stage.. i.e you do not have the injection, and wait for the placenta to detach naturally. if you put the baby to the breast , the hormones released can help expel the placenta.

agree with about - you have a choice of injection to help, or let nature take its course. I opted to let it come out without the injection. Took 45 mins (longer than pushing dd out) but it wasn't painful. I believe if you have the injection, you often don't realise what's happening. Your mw should be able to provide you with details.

It certainly didn't hurt. All the pain seems to stop when the baby comes out.

you should be asked for consent before the injection is given, preferably before the baby is crowning !!

Be warned: the injection makes a lot of women feel sick/vomit. I was as sick as a dog and it didn't help that the MW was trying to tell me that it was 'my hormones'. No dear, it's the artificial hormones you just gave me.

i didn't have injection 2nd time round and they couldn't seem to get the placenta out and much tugging ensued and they then catheterised me (v briefly) and I pushed like crazy and they got it out. not very pleasant. but I don't think they waited v long. sort of put me off being natural and made me wonder if I'd just have the injection again this time (which i did first time and have no recollection at all of placenta coming out!)

Just for anyone who doesn't want the injection, I didn't want it second time, but they didn't ask me if I did, I was too caught up in baby to tell them not to, and they just did it, it is my only regret about my labour with DS2.
