Strep B

Hello,

Does anyone know if strep b is still a worry if you are having a c section? I've had two sections before and after my last one I got a letter in the post a week later saying I had tested positive for strep b at the time of my section.

Of course a week later it was useless as I was home with baby and nothing more was said, but I was a bit worried about whether this could have had an affect of my unborn baby at the time.

I'm going to mention it this time around as I will be having a section again, has anyone else had this?

Thanks!

Hiya,

I have Strep B and from what the midwife told me you should be fine. You will be given antibiotics via a drip in a C-Section anyway which will help to keep baby safe, which is all they do for vaginal birth.

Its only a issue i believe if your waters break before your c-section, but even then its not a real issue as you will be put straight on antibiotics - basically, i think your safe.

But always worth asking the midwife yourself x

Sorry for jumping in. My understanding is that strep b isn't constant throughout pregnancy? They're meant to check for it as labour approaches but I don't think you necessarily "have" it constantly? Happy to be corrected though as it's been a worry through my current pregnancy. I really don't want to have the drip again this time :(

My understanding is that they don't give antibiotics with C sections as there is no risk. They didn't test me again @Kindofcrunchy after I was found to have Strep B in early pregnancy. They said they would just give antibiotics then when it was found, then again during labour. My labour ended up being really quick that they didn't have time to give me the antibiotics so instead baby was monitored for signs of infection after birth (vaginal) for 24 hours. He was fine and it didn't get passed on.

The midwife explained it to me that you either have the bacteria or you don’t, but the infection can lay dormant so to speak so will give antibiotics via drip at birth every 4 hours as a precautionary- although I am also no expert! Xx

Thanks @LT2 and @lucylooareyou -i guess I should mentally prepare myself to have the drip again then :'(
