MORPHINE ITCH...good grief

I had an elective section in October and was reminiscing about it recently.

Anyone else get an almighty itch from the morphine in the spinal?!

Like I mean tear your skin off itch. 😂😂 my husband said I looked like a drug addict coming off their fix.

They gave me piriton for it...which did nothing. Probably the one really negative side effect I had of my section

There was a strange satisfaction though in scratching 😂

Oh yes, it was horrendous, especially with how hot the ward was! Nobody warned me I might itch like crazy.

@MustBeThursday haha yes the ward was like an oven!!

Ahhh…
I had terrible awful, 24/7 itching after an elective section. It went in for about three days. Is that what it was? I have never been able to work out what caused it.

Awful! I had no idea what it was, but then when I mentioned it, the nurse was like ' oh yes, that's common!'. Bit of piriton and I was fine!

So itchy, soo so itchy. I actually had scratches on my face afterwards.

FIZZYTEDDY · 03/05/2022 22:46

@Drbrowns I've never felt an itch like it!! And everywhere!! My husband was so shocked at the amount I scratched 😂

Yep, the anaesthetists said they'd never seen anyone with such an extreme itch reaction as me and had to change the meds. I was sobbing with how itchy I was.

SoggyPaper · 03/05/2022 22:51

I have such bad itching from all opioids that my rheumatologist said I should consider myself allergic to them.

its awful. I actually itch for several days and scratched myself bloody. I have scars from scratching when they decided I should try tramadol for pain relief.

They gave me antihistamine with morphine in A&E when I dislocated my arm because there was no way they were going to be able to X-ray it without giving me morphine first.

This makes me a bit angry as none of the staff were interested . The nurses said they didn’t know what it was. It was absolute hell.

FIZZYTEDDY · 04/05/2022 13:34

@PineMartenPeanutbutter that is frustrating they didn't know what it was - you'd think they'd be used to it by now!!

It's a fairly common side effect. I couldn't understand why I was sooo itchy because I hadn't had morphine IV or orally but it was the anaesthetist that told me it's the morphine in the spinal. Would explain why the itch lingered about for so long too!

I have morphine quite often and I don’t get the itchy after effects any more thankfully but the first few times it was awful…especially my thighs for some reason!
