No period after childbirth - help

I posted this in Health but no-one answered so I thought here would be better.
DD is 12 weeks old and so far I haven't had a period. I had a tiny bit of spotting about three weeks ago but it stopped after two days without ever turning into anything. I'm not breastfeeding so it's not being caused by that, didn't have a Caesarian, PN bleeding stopped after 4 weeks, and have already done a pg test just in case, but it was negative. Has anyone else out there gone this long after childbirth without one? How long should I leave it before I go to GP? Any advice gratefully accepted.

OMG, i hope your not pregnant already

have u used protection since having ur baby?

trish12 · 10/01/2008 17:47

because that happened to my friend, and her test was negative, coz ur hormormes are all messed up as uve just given birth

Chattyhan · 10/01/2008 17:48

i haven't either and ds2 is 16 wks - don't worry! I'm bf and they say that can hold periods off for longer so thats what i'm assuming!

lulumama · 10/01/2008 17:48

if you have had unprotected sex, there is a chance you could be pregnant... even if test is negative, you might need to retest.. or it might simply be hormones getting back to normal , and taking a bit longer

bear in mind even without a period, you could still have ovulated

meandboys · 10/01/2008 17:49

maybe speak to your doctor and they will be able to do another test for you!

Chattyhan · 10/01/2008 17:52

kaled - like you i had a tiny bit of spotting on 2 different occasions and thought my period was coming but it just went away. I'm definately not pregnant!

kaled · 10/01/2008 18:29

Thanks for the replies everyone. We have been very careful as we don't want any more children. I really don't think pregnancy is a possibility, but I took a test just to reassure myself. I was more just wondering if your periods can take a while to come back even if you're not breastfeeding.

Mine took about 14/15 weeks following DD, think it can be quite variable as to length of time for return.

Diege · 10/01/2008 20:48

14 weeks after dd3, and I wasn't breast-feeding either. Heallth visitor wasn't worried at 12 weeks, but I was to give it another few weeks and then come back

jaype · 11/01/2008 10:20

Was bf so it took me about 8 and 10 months respectively or it to come back. Never thought I'd miss AF but it's often a releif to kno there's nothing else taking root in there!!!

belcantavinissima · 11/01/2008 10:54

i didnt have a period for about 16 months after having dd!

moocowme · 11/01/2008 11:06

had 3 very heavy ones at 4,6 and 8 weeks and nothing since. its now 16 weeks. i am not pregnant unless its an immaculate conception. i am sure they will come back eventually.
