How do C-Section lists get decided?

Just that really - how do they decide who goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc on elective c-section lists? Mine is soon and i'm worried I'll be placed low on the list and end up getting postponed.

Lots of factors. I went first because I was diabetic, a friend went first because you was becoming increasingly stressed following a previous traumatic birth, other friends with no issues have gone later.

Tightforthyme · 18/03/2022 21:00

For both of mine it was most risky first and cascaded from there. I was first up with #1 and was first up with #2 until the person who was meant to be after me started having contractions so was taken in first.

I believe if someone has gestational diabetes and is scheduled for a c-section they usually go first or as a priority.

I asked this question of my midwife lately. I’m having an elective c section but it’s a high risk pregnancy and I’ve been monitored throughout. The baby is measuring really big and I’ve had repeated gestational diabetes tests because they think it’s false negatives. Even with all thag I’ve been told I’ll probably be bottom of the list/ end of the day because I’m young and was relatively healthy before falling pregnant. I was told it might be a long wait due to emergencies etc
I’m hoping that won’t be the case and I’ll be higher up the list but who knows! The midwife said it can all change on the day!

I was told I was first because of having twins but I don't know if that is a general rule.

willwewontwe · 19/03/2022 08:53

I was last but knew I’d be last as I had no physical reason to be there (just sheer terror of the alternative option 😂). On the day I nearly went second last as the girl before’s covid result hadn’t came back in time but in the end up it came in just as they were about to take me down. I do know one person at my hospital who was asked to come back the next day due to emergencies but hopefully that won’t happen to you

On the online session they offered before it they did say anyone with diabetes was always first due to not being allowed to eat. Then it was in order of severity of medical issues really

Mammyofasuperbaby · 19/03/2022 08:58

My first was an emergency so I went in as soon as the theatre was free, however my second was elective and I was first on the list due to restricted growth and previous severe pre eclampsia so they didn't want me waiting around.

As everyone else has said, when I had DD three years ago it was order of clinical need. I had gestational diabetes so was first on the list that day. I was at the hospital at 7am and DD was born at about 10.15. There is a risk if you are a low risk pregnancy and at the end of the list then there could be emergencies that means you are delayed to the next day.

MumandnotMum · 19/03/2022 09:06

I was postponed but I was first on the list for the next day then which made it slightly less devastating!

MontgomeryHawka · 19/03/2022 09:11

I was originally first on the list but they didn’t have any of my blood type ready. I ended up being last on the list while waiting for my blood to arrive. So it can all change on the day.

I was going to ask this question lately too!

I'm expecting twins and will be having a CS...wondered at what point I would feature on the list too :-)

Baker90 · 20/03/2022 18:39

I was was really high risk for various reasons and ended up being last on the list. Their main reason being they had to wait for a cardiologist to be on standby for me as I have heart issues. I was lucky though as no emergencies came through and she was born just after 12 but was in hospital from 7am.

Beachsidesunset · 20/03/2022 18:42

First due to placenta previa and bleeding.

Runkle · 20/03/2022 22:16

It's all to do with risk factors pertaining to the need for section. They only did 2 planned sections on the day of mine and the lady who went before me was an emergency from the evening before. Plus even if you are first on the list they'll warn you that there's always the chance that emergencies will take priority.

neptuneandcoke · 28/03/2022 19:19

Thank you for all your responses - baby came via c-section on Friday! I was first on the list (I've had some issues with anaesthesia before so they wanted to do me first in case it was tricky), otherwise I was relatively low risk. Interesting to see how it differs by hospital. So relieved it's over now.

Congratulations. I was first on the list with dc4 because I'd been bumped from the previous day and because my waters had been broken for more than 48 hours.
