Giving birth on blood thinners

Hello,
Has anyone given birth on blood thinners? I have a blood clotting disorder and I'm on aspirin and heparin daily. I'm petrified of losing too much blood during labour. I don't see my consultant for 4 weeks and I'm so anxious about it all, I've read some people have been induced early and stopped the blood thinners 24 hours before.
I'm just wondering what your experiences are.
Thank you Smile

I have been on clexane and aspirin since I had a positive test. I am currently 37 weeks and was induced yesterday! I had to stop the clexane and aspirin 24 hrs before induction as there is a risk of too much blood loss otherwise. My consultant didn't really explain this to me but once I knew my induction date I spoke to labour ward and they confirmed it to me.

Thank you. I hope everything is going well with your induction, I'm assuming they'll be keeping a close on you until baby is here x

I was on aspirin & heparin injections and they stopped them just before birth - can’t remember exactly how long a few days I think. I was induced and then restarted them after.
I had consultant led care and absolutely no issues at all.

Good luck Flowers

Thank you so much, definitely keeping my mind at ease before my appointment. Thank you. Do you mind me asking how many weeks you were induced? Sorry I'm a ftm and extremely anxious about it all.

I was induced at exactly 40 weeks - I wasn’t allowed to go overdue at all. It did take a few days for him to make it out though!

Hospital told me not to take the heparin injection in the morning if I thought I was going into labour so it would be 24 hours out of my system.
I was under the impression it's because if I wanted an epidural there wouldn't be a complication.

I took it during both pregnancies, no complications during the births.

It will not contribute to excessive blood loss, that would be too dangerous considering how many women are on blood thinners and how many go into spontaneous labour.

I was induced at 37 weeks with both of mine because of Heparin/clexaine and stopped these 24 hours before induction. It's more to do with having an epidural and not because of blood loss during the labour. You can't have an epidural with in 24 hours of having blood thinners.

I was induced unexpectedly at 40+5 due to a check for reduced movement so no chance to come off the blood thinners and it was a pretty quick birth and absolutely no problems at all with blood loss. Don’t worry too much you’ll be fine and good luck!! Flowers

PP are right - you need to stop your blood thinners 24 hours before labour in case you want an epidural/need a spinal for a section. It’s in case blood pools in your spine from the epidural (or something along those lines). Surely this should be explained to you though.

I was on Innohep injections every day throughout two of my pregnancies because of previous clot on my lung. With DS1 I actually went into labour 3 weeks early. It had been about 12 hours since I had injected myself and they still said it was okay. I had a section.
I was back on the thinners within a day after both deliveries too for 6 weeks.

Don’t worry. You’ll be grand.
