What do you think? Waters breaking early

Hi everyone, FTM here.

My waters broke yesterday at exactly 36 weeks they have kept me in hospital for monitoring, everything is okay so far apart from the continuos leaking, but they have said I can go home on bed rest today with antibiotics and come back on Sunday 6th Feb in 6 days to be induced as she will then be 37 weeks, but now my partner is worried about infections and horror stories we have seen and heard.

So my question is,

Would you be happy to go home with broken waters or would you prefer to stay in hospital to be monitored or try and push an induction? I'm not saying I know best or going against what I have been advised, would just like to hear your stories or opinions 💕

I wouldn’t be happy to go home and wait 6 days with broken waters with the risk of infection

NHS advises 24 hours from waters breaking to induction if natural labour hasn’t started. I’d want to know why they are leaving it 5 days over this?

I hope you and baby are ok.

I'd be pitching a tent in the maternity ward if they tried to send me home with broken waters for 6 days!

I would 💯 want to go home!

I wouldn’t go home. It isn’t worth the risk, and you would blame yourself if something went wrong. Have they given you steroids? To be honest I would be pushing for induction in the next few days. I was induced at 36 weeks and baby born bang on 37, if it helps my baby was over 6lb, needed no additional help bar some light therapy for jaundice and the birth was fine (although I would ask for an epidural as inductions are quite intense). Best of luck to you.

I would stay in hospital. My waters broke at 37+5 and i was told i would be induced if contractions didn't start within 24hrs (i was admitted due to high BP). I wasn't given antibiotics and my contractions started after 12hrs. Even then and with hospital monitoring, my DD still caught an infection and developed sepsis. She was very poorly for a while (NICU / SCBU). I wouldn't want the responsibility of being at home and having to check temp, watch for infection signs etc.

In our unit they would do the same home with abx and to check temp regularly throughout the day any change in colour of liquor ie green or brown you would be advised to come straight back to the unit to check for meconium.

Within the next week you would be invited in for ctg monitoring in the triage dept to assess fetal well being and you would have bloods taken to check for any rising infection markers. If baby is moving well and you are well there is no risk being at home. If anything changes with either you or baby you call triage and go straight in for a check.

Steroids are not required at this gestation. They are giving you and your baby the extra week to get to term which is beneficial for baby and hopefully you will go into spontaneous labour before they have to offer you induction.
Goodluck I hope it all goes well.

I was in this sitatation at 34 weeks although my hospital said checks every other day. The NHS guidance is max 3 days. 6 days with no checks is a very long time. Are you sure they won't bring you in for monitoring.

I was being monitored for 72 hours and she was born within 48 anyway. She was born perfectly healthy bar some jaundice and a minor infection. She's 6 weeks old and bar being small she's perfectly healthy.

Apparently you're more likely to go into labour if your waters continue leaking than if they go and stop so hopefully you won't have to make the decision but id push for an induction. The fear of sepsis etc and the impact on my mental health are not worth it for me

Ashchall95 · 07/02/2022 07:37

Hi everyone thanks for replying, they kept me in an extra night as a my scan showed I had no water left at all, they booked an induction for 10.30 the following morning and she came natural at 4am instead 💕 she's perfectly healthy and well, best day of my life xx
