40 week Sweep? Experiences?

Anyone have a membrane sweep at 40 weeks? Did it help start labour?

I had one at 39+6. Labour started about 50hrs later so it’s likely would have happened then anyway. I found it quite uncomfortable but it was over quickly. I did bleed a bit after which I was warned could happen.

Looking back I didn’t ask about the risks and I wish I had. I was just so done with being pregnant that I would have agreed to anything that might kick start the process. I don’t think I would bother again.

I did at 40 weeks and 1 day... it was bloody painful but worked! Went into labour within half an hour!

Was booked for another on my due date with ds2 but went into labour naturally with hi m. Midwife who checked me at hospital even said "if youre not dilated enough ill just give you a sweep!".

I've had 3 so far and very much still pregnant (nearly 41 weeks).
Don't go into it expecting labour as you will be disappointed if it doesn't happen (like me). I have a couple more booked in before my induction date to try and get things going. I've progressed after each one so hoping no 4 will do the trick 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Didn't happen for me

Had one at 39+6 but my waters had already gone. Baby born 5 hours later!

Sweeps are an intervention with risks. Your due period is 37-42 weeks so you still have two weeks to go. Trust your body. Your baby will come when it's ready.
I know this time in pregnancy can be frustrating and boring but use the waiting time to do things you won't be able to when baby is here, and I'm sure your busy will go into labour soon.
If not, you can discuss your options at 41 weeks with your midwife.

I did. She said I was very favourable and that she expected I wld go in next day or 2 and advised to do all the things that help. Sex, spicy food, long walk etc. I did it all and it didn't work 😩

I think it only works if ur about to go into labour anyway.

I had one at 40 weeks. MW said my cervix was so firmly closed she'd think I wasn't pregnant if she didn't know otherwise. Was sent home being told it most likely hadn't worked.
Went into labour that night (less than 12 hours later) and baby was born 2 hours after that.

Blossomandbee · 02/01/2022 14:55

I agree I think they they only work if you're about to go into labour anyway.
I had one at 40 weeks, then another a week later. Neither worked, in fact I was scored as having a less favourable cervix on the second one. Both made me feel crampy, hormonal and rubbish for days. Wouldn't have one again.

GurkeyTurkey · 02/01/2022 15:14

I had one at 41 weeks and went into labour about 36 hours later. The midwife did say I was 2-3cm dilated when she did it though, so I might have gone into labour anyway. I had a bit of spotting after which they warned me about but otherwise it was fine.

morechocolateneededtoday · 02/01/2022 15:31

Had one at 38, 39 and 40 weeks. They weren't painful, mild discomfort at worst and apparently all favourable for baby to come. Baby did not budge until 41+3

8dpwoah · 02/01/2022 15:36

I had one with each of mine, neither worked but they were both in the run-up to inductions so it was useful to know what the state of play was, as it were. The first one hurt but with my second it was just a bit uncomfortable.

whosaidtha · 02/01/2022 15:44

They don't work. I firmly believe that. Anyone who says they did I think it was coincidence. They are given to women who are likely to go into labour anyway (39 weeks+) so of course a large number will go into labour shortly after. I had 4 with each of my pregnancies. None worked.
