natural birth after emergency c-section, is it wise to try?

Here's my brief history:

C-section style operation to remove fibroids. First dc born a year later, induced leading to emergency c-section. Second dc due three and a half years later, what are my chances of having a natural birth? Fibroids are still a potential problem, growing through this pregnancy, doctors think they may have contributed to first dc's heart rate drop during induced labour.
Anyone with any advice, tips, similar experience?

My sil has had 2 vbaecs with no problems at all. she was told that her surgeon had spent alot of time sewing her up carefully to make sure a vbac was viable next time so would be worth talking to your surgeon/consultant to get their opinion. docs will probably advise you be monitored in hospital during labour as there's a risk of your scar rupturing.

Planningahead, there is another thread at the moment about fibroids and what they mean for natural birth vs c-section. Basically it depends where they are, and how big - how pregnant are you and what scans have you had so far?

I'm 13 weeks now, the midwife present at first dc's birth said there were many small fibroids visible, so I guess that's still the case, the initial operation removed the biggest ones but I was told that will always have them and that they grow during pregnancy, scans so far have not identified any problem fibroids yet.

I don't know anything about fibroids but I have had 2 VBAC after an emergency section. Wasn't plain sailing by any means but my babies are here.

Thanks for that pheebe and monkeys, good to know. What worries me is how are you supposed to know whether or not if your scar is going to hold out when you're already in so much pain anyway, did you feel anything? Was it harder? I've already pretty much been advised by everyone NOT to go for a VB, looks like I may have a fight on my hands.

My scar wasn't a problem with VBAC1 but it was a serious one with VBAC2.

Hi,i haven't had fibroids but i have now had 3 v-bacs after my emergency c-section. One was a induction at 19 days over,one natural at 21 days over and one natural at a wk early. The only probs i had was a slightly achey scar during my fourth preg but they were't worried. Rupture is fairly uncommon and a very dif pain to labour.

planning ahead, I was on the other thread aswell. I had two fibroids which gave me hell and grew to the size of oranges. Originally I was to have a c-section because one of the fibroids was near the birth canal then the scan at 37 weeks showed it was out of the way. When my waters broke and nothing happened four days later I chose to have the c-section anyway. I think there is a good chance you can have a natural birth it will just depend on the position of the fibroids.

Hi - I only knew I had fibroids following the vbac birth of my son.
The hospital said that after my first cs with dd, I could choose whether or not to have a vbac and that it was entirely up to me.

When it came to it, they said they would only let me push for an hour but I begged them to let me try for another 30mins before the consultant came in and delivered him using Ventouse.

Throughout labour, the midwives were regularly checking me to watch for rupturing (not sure how but that's what they said).

I would do whatever you feel comfortable with doing - at the end of the day, if you are more worried about the risks with rupturing than you are about the section surgery, then have a section. Or try for a vbac and see how you get on - they won't risk anything and will whip you in for a section if they're at all worried.

Nope,just very determined . I had a fab consultant who gave me the courage to trust myself. The biggest problem was not being induced as i didn't want to be induced too early for it to work and end up having anpther c-section.

planningahead, not I haven't had them removed. I would have thought they could have whipped them out while they were delivering ds I have had some abdominal pain since so wonder if it is the fibroids. My homeopath said she could give me something to shrink them. Not sure I would opt for surgery unless I had to.

They can't usually take out fibroids during a c-section - I asked them and they said it is too dangerous as both are big operations on their own. I went on a special diet to try to shrink mine, but that's a whole other story.

80% chance of normal delivery after C section so pretty much the same as a primips chances

they may scan you a few times to check all ok though and fibroids etc
