Hi all,

Had HSV type 1 genitally diagnosed in 2012
After the initial, horrendous outbreak I haven't had an obvious outbreak of any kind since. Had a phone consultation recently with a doctor regarding management of this issue as I'm due to give birth in a few months.
Have been offered the suppression medication to take. I'm inclined to decline having ready up, would just like to know from anyone else what they decided?
My research suggests that there is a risk of passing on to baby during vaginal birth if experiencing a primary infection only.

I'm just reluctant to take any medication unless absolutely necessary

Thanks

I have HSV and rarely have outbreaks now but with both pregnancies I have taken suppression’s meds to reduce the chances of having an outbreak when I am due to give birth. I didn’t want to be worrying about it during my last few weeks or having to opt for a section because I’d had an avoidable outbreak when I was due/in labour. It is totally up to you but I think there is very limited risk to baby by taking it and certainly clear benefits to both of you if you do. Another bonus is that since I took the meds with first pregnancy, my outbreaks have reduced by a significant amount over the three years since so the long term meds helped that too. Hope that helps x
