Trouble passing water after giving birth

My wife gave birth on Tuesday morning at 5.15 and we are both astoundingly happy!!! (11 days overdue but certainly worth the wait )

The only problem is she had 2nd degree tearing which was stitched after the birth. Also, she is also having trouble passing water. Specifically, she knows her bladder is full but cannot actually pass the water. She has a catheter fitted which helps but now has to wait until the swelling goes down.

Any advice/ sympathy/ wisdom or you experiences would be very gratefully received.

No advice, but thought I'd give it a bump in case someone more knowledgeable is about.

Is it fear? I had the same with DS1 and was terrified to wee, to the point I was in pain holding it in because it hurt so very much when I did wee.

I was told to run a warm bath and wee in that as it makes it less painful physically and the water may also help her to 'go' if its in her head.

there will be some issue with sensation after a delivery like this, everything is bruised and swollen.

arnica pillules are good for bruising.

these things do take a while to settle down. it is very early days yet

Oh Lord - had forgotten about that! I found that standing up a bit and leaning forwards helped - kitty's point about the bath also helped. Tea tree oil in bath also generally good, and I sat on icepacks a bit, though I have no idea if that's a correct thing to do.

The other thing you can try is turning a tap on when you go - the sound of the running water can get everything going. Or (dare I say it) wee in the shower. Your poor wife, hope it sorts itself out soon. Congrats btw

when the cathereter is taken out(i presume by what you are saying that its in situ?) tell her to be aware that the insertion of the catherter may have introduced infection in the urethra and to contact her midwife if shes feeling any burning stinging etc.

If she leans forward whilst semi standing whilst urinating, the urine will flow away from the perineum(and the stitches) and should cause minimal discomfort(if any). If she is nervous to go the first time either going whilst in a warm bath or pouring a jug of tepi water over the perineum whilst urinating should help. tell her to avoid any urge of sitting on one one side to avoid the discomfort, this could cause the stitches to pull and would be more painful in the long run. after about a week she may feel as if the stitches are getting really tight, this is the stitches tightening as the perineum is healing.
