Meptid as pain relief in labour.................

Hi to all,
Just wondered if there is any one out there who might have an experience of using 'meptid' for pain relief in labour? Would yo have any reviews to share?

Hiya, no personal experience but I have 2 friends who had Meptid and swore by it ... so much so that 10 months after when I had ds, I asked the midwife for it and was told that they don't offer it anymore - I asked if I could have it if I asked and thay said no because of the cost - HTH

It seems its back in the market again and I am going to a birth center and they have told me that they stock it.

No experience of it either..but im having a homebirth and was told i couldnt have pethidene, but can have meptid....? will ask midwife next visit xx

i had meptid with dd1 and its very similar to pethidine (had that with dd2) found it helped with the pain and wore off after about 2 hrs (or thats what it felt like) i managed with that and g&a.

I had it with dd1. It was very nice . If dd1 hadn't got stuck I'm sure I could have got through the whole thing with a couple of injections of it.

I had meptid with my first - and was completely out of it for a while, just mad me very sleepy.
"nd and 3rd - waterbirth with just gas and air, absolutely fab ( in a labour kinda way)

No personal experience of using meptid, but when DS was born in Cambs the NCT teacher said that it was standard at local hospital to use Meptid instead of Pethidine and that it was somehow better for the baby, maybe doesn't cross the placenta as much?

Meptid was supposed to have less side effects for the baby in that it didn't cause breathing problems. Years ago the unit I trained in used it.

Anyway, it apparently did have side effects for mother and baby (as do all drugs) but the pain relief was not as good.

My unit doesn't use it al all now.
