Blood loss - when will it stop

empen · 20/11/2007 22:30

I had my ds 2 weeks ago today and I am just wondering when the blood loss should end. It seemed as though it was drying up but it has actually got a lot heavier in the last 2/3 days.
I had a blood clot in my womb that had to be pushed out following elec c section then had anaemia so was put on iron tabs but had to stop them cause they were making me ill - not sure if any of that would make a difference cause perhaps it is normal to have such heavy bleeding after 2 weeks?? Anyone got any experience?

Some women bleed up to 6 weeks after, if your flow was slowing and has restarted it could indicate that you've maybe over exerted yourself a bit, also if it becomes smelly or if you start having stomach pains see your doc because it could be an infection.

estobi1 · 22/11/2007 16:14

I am still bleeding six weeks post delivery (same first time round). This time I stopped and restarted which I have attributed to either doing too much or possibly to a period(Hope not!!). My Gp was not worried when I was still bleeding heavily at this stage.

i bled for 6 weeks followin my DD's birth but i also had a uterine infection which cause the bleeding to be heavier than previous days. i saw my gp and he prescribed me some antibiotics and the bleeding stopped after i finished the course. HTH xx
congrats on th birth of your baby btw

after emergency c-section, i bled for almost 10 weeks. 6/7 weeks non-stop, then the last 3 weeks on and off. thankfully have now had almost 2 "dry" weeks

empen · 22/11/2007 21:33

gosh, i was hoping it would stop soon - am looking forward to some

i had exactly the same feelings, but bleeding soon put paid to those, then pg hormones wore off and i ended up thinking "my god i'd better get this over with before it becomes an issue" !!!!! oh where has my life gone?!! wouldnt change it for the world mind

Kerri28 · 22/11/2007 22:16

Nearly six months before things were finally back to normal..... Good thing Dh is a patient man!

The books tell you that you will probably bleed less after a section than a baginal delivery, by reason of the uterus being swabbed out. Complete tosh - DD is on Day 11 today after VBAC and my bleeding is absolutely minor compared to that with DS. Asked SIL who is a a MW about it and although she said every pg different, more likely you will bleed more after section because you haven't lost lots of the blood and mucus during delivery.

It is tedious but hang in there. I vaguely remember getting really hacked off with the length of time it was taking with DS (and feeling everyone lied to me about the 'slightly heavy period' after nirth - understatement of the year. And then a couple of days later, it really started to peter out and was over by the end of that week.

Not having periods is one of the few benefits of being pg to me (I don't do pg well) so I felt really shortchanged the first time!

stripeybumpsmum · 23/11/2007 12:04

Have invented a new word - baginal delivery apparently an abbreviated version of slightly bruised and bashed Vaginal delivery....

And after birth rather than nirth of course.

Really should spell check first but DD about to wake up I think.

katpotat · 23/11/2007 14:12

I stopped bleeding the day before my six week check up, I did feel like it was never going to end! Although my period came back after another four!! and I am breastfeeding too!

geekymummy · 23/11/2007 14:53

had 8 weeks post partum bleeding... DDis 8 mtnhs ol and no period yet... (still BF)

BJB21 · 23/11/2007 15:05

i had ds2 8 weeks ago and i bled for 6 wks. Though saying that the last two wks were more of a brown loss(very light) and just needed panty liner. Had first period this week. wITH DS1 i bled for 3 wks and period after 5wks.

mrsshackleton · 23/11/2007 17:18

8 weeks after first when very stressed indeed, about four weeks after second, both cs's, it's annoying but it will stop eventually and if you bf you could then have up to nine months blood free

snooks · 23/11/2007 17:22

Like katpotat I stopped bleeding the day or so before my six week check......undid my jeans so gp could check my stitches and lo and behold I'd started bleeding again! Grrr - not much though and it pretty much stopped after that.

cmotdibbler · 23/11/2007 20:19

Took nearly 12 weeks for mine to stop, which was really tedious. Eventually a piece of placenta about the size of a dice came out, and the bleeding stopped immediatly.

milkybarsrus · 23/11/2007 22:26

I bled for 13 weeks and felt like crap the whole time. went to the dr's several times and explained how my stomach felt battered and bruised and was finding things like stairs, driving, carrying baby in car seat and even walking difficult. Eventually saw a differant dr who sent me straight to the local hospital and I had a scan which showed i had loads of placenta present and clots.Next day had a D & C, and i can honestly say i felt 100% cured. Only wish they had listened to me sooner and I could have enjoyed the early days more!

AnnainNZ · 24/11/2007 04:41

Had dd 3 weeks ago and lochia has just about finished now. Was lighter than I expected - have loads of packets of pads left, I bought loads as a friend told me I might go through a packet of them a day whereas I have only needed 2 a day.

fortyplus · 24/11/2007 09:17

5 weeks both times for me

lemonaid · 24/11/2007 09:39

5 weeks for me, and doctors had said not to worry unless it went on for more than nine weeks.
