Second dose of oral Vit K is usually given on day 5 with the PKU (heel prick/Guthrie/whatever you want to call it!) - at least that's my local protocol. We give parents the second dose to take home with them when they leave hospital and the mw comes to the house and gives it.

The mw certainly should have documented that it was given, and should have a record of it. Call your community office and ask them. Your ds should also have a third dose at about one month if he is exclusively breastfed. You can get this done at your GP's.

mmm, I keep hearing about 3rd dose these days but my dd (29 months) never got a 3rd dose....

jamila169 · 12/11/2007 23:16

none of my first 2 even got their 2nd klaw! I had it in DD's birth plan that if there wasn't any trauma to her I wouldn't bother, same this time. there's some interesting reading around about Vit K anyway (esp if you breastfeed)

Hey Lisa, I'm aware of the VIT K theories. DD was bf exclusive till nearly 6 months and there was never any intention to stop before a year. So that's fine

But she was assisted by forceps so I guess maybe she was better having it... i dunno...

If I'm fortunate to have another and it's the fantastic HBAC I want then there will be a physiological 3rd stage and no VIT K. Certainly, not injection! We didn't want her injected when she could get it orally.

I'm actually thinking now that she never had the 2nd dose..... just can't remember it at all....

how are you?

Bloody crippled Klaw - DH rolled on me the other night and crunched my SI joints to oblivion so i'm waiting for the Chiro to slot me in -I've got a cracking excuse for being on MN though, my puter chair is the only one in the house i can get comfy on

Oh poor you!

I've decided to get to chiropracter or osteopath once finances allow. I've had two very bad falls on my coccyx ice skating (or rather ice wobbling) over the last 12 years, a bad fal on stairs hitting my coccyx again 2 years ago.

Also having heard Jean Sutton and spoke to my mum about my birth i understand now why I've never been able to touch my toes....

I need my alignment checked out! for sure!!!!

Hope you manage to cope ok until you can get an appointment... ((Hugs))

My DS was given an oral dose of vit K at birth. As I'm breastfeeding I was given a bottle of vit K solution to take home, and I have to give him 0.25ml of it each day using a dropper.
AFAIK, formula-fed babies don't need extra vit K as formula contains a vit K supplement.
