Complications 5 months after cs

Hi, It's now over 5 months since I had my twin boys by emergency cs, and part of my scar (which had previously healed well) has now blistered and is breaking down. It's now leaking gunky yellow pus, serous fluid and blood - lovely . I saw my GP yesterday before it started leaking and he suggested it may be a 'stitch abcess'. I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem and how long it took to heal?

Ive no direct experience myself, but a friend of mine had this over a year after her C-section and she needed to go back in for a clean up of the scar tissue and re-stitching.

Did he give you any ABs? I had an infection in my scar at two weeks and it took an age to heal (bits of it were still open until about four weeks post section). I was given two separate types of AB to cover various infections and they took a swab so they could determine which ABs would work best.

Hi, thanks for the info. Do you know what caused your friends wound to breakdown? No AB's yet, but the nurse took a swab today and gave me some more dry dressings. More stuff coming out of it today and even the nurse said that it was very unusual and she wanted to send me back to the locum GP. Unfortunately GP was full today and I couldn't wait for end of surgery as I had the boys with me. I'll see how it goes over the next few days and hopefully they'll have the swab results back by next week. x

they thought that it was just a low grade infection that had been building slowly iirc.

I'm surprised they haven't given you anything for it in the meantime. I hope it starts to get better soon, but if it gets worse or you start to notice swelling and redness or feel unwell you need to get yourself to A&E quick smart. Skin infections can be pretty voracious once they get hold.

I think the Nurse expected me to be on them too, but as I'm feeling ok and I can't see a Dr for a few days we both agreed to wait and see what the swab results were. Hopefully nothing too scary.

I think you definitely need someone to do something and give you AB's sooner rather than later. My scar began to get infected at my 5 day check when they removed my stiches. I was prescribed AB's but two days later about half my scar burst open and deposited a large amount of blood and puss on the bathroom floor. Quick amulance to hospital and was given IV AB's which they said would last for 24 hours, possibly 48 hours if the infection was that bad. I ended up having IV AB's for 5 days and was in hospital for 6 days. Ended up having a second surgery after the infection was gone to resuture the wound.

Mine was an extreme case but something should be done as you obviously have an infection.

Hi there, my scar did what yours has after 3 months, and I was a little scared (it was my second emergency c-section and I had nothing like this with my first) and as it happened at a weekend I saw an our-of-hours doc who put me on to ABs straight away (for one week), and then on the Monday my GP's nurse took a swab to check I had the correct ABs to treat the infection. It healed quite quickly (within 2 weeks) and touch wood is fine now. However it still has a scab on (I'm 4.5 months post section) and sorry if TMI but where the hair follicles are on the scar and hair is trying to grow back causes it to be quite uncomfortable still. I would press for oral ABs asap. Good luck xxx

Oh Hersetta, that sounds very nasty. Thankfully my wound seems to have stopped leaking over the last 2 days, after it discharged a lot of muck the day before! As madmumNika says, the hair follicles on the scar may be playing a part in it, either that or it was a stitch that has discharged itself. Fingers crossed it won't reopen again. It still has a very shiny appearance and is different from the rest of the scar, but I'll phone tomorrow for the swab results and take it from there. Thanks for sharing your experiences. xx

Just thought I'd update you, the wound swab came back positive and I'm now on antibiotics for a week. Hopefully this will be the end of it. xx

sorry to hijack the thread but i had an em c section two weeks ago- wound was fine till this morning whn i noticed clear fluid weeping from edge of wound - docs are obviously closed for weekend will it be ok if i just take it easy tomorrow and get an apt to see gp on monday - am i right in saying no point going to midwife.

sorry it's taken me so long to get online again, I hope you've managed to see the GP or a midwife by now. Clear fluid can be normal, it's the yukky stuff that means an infection. How has it been since Saturday? x
