Friend being induced - is this normal

My friend went in on Monday 5 days overdue with first baby and was induced.

She doesnt seem to be progressing and is in agony and tired having nit slept for two nights. She was last examined at 4am and was 1cm and they said they would break waters today but as no staff and delivery rooms full she is still waiting with pains starting up again and feeling very emotional.

Is this usual for someone being induced?

yes, i'm afraid it is

if labour ward is full , then she has to stay on ante natal

5 days over is early to be induced, was there a reason other than being over

sounds like her cervix was not ready, hence it is taking a long time to get her going

if her waters are broken, it has to be done on delivery suite so if it is full of labouring women, she has to wait

best thing would be to potter around, rest if she can, and walk, be upright and use gravity rtather than lying in bed waiting, she will feel she is doing something then too.

she had high blood pressure so they decided to induce her

I thought it might take a while as she had no signs of being ready

Feel so sorry for her it being her first and she sounded so low and tired,

Can they give her any pain relief?

ok

hmm. if she is not ready, then it is going to take time

she can have tablets on ante natal ward.. paracetoaml and codeine, she could have a bath or shower to.. use tens if she has one, sit on a birth ball and rock, if her partner can stay with her, she can have a back rub.

nothing like gas and air or pethidine is available until you are on labour ward in established labour

i got gas and air on ante natal ward. they wouldn't give me an epidural when i moved to labour ward for the syntocin though.

VoodooLULUmama · 25/10/2007 20:35

oh , ok ,must be available in different areas then

Not knowing when she had Prostin, tablets or Gel, it's difficult to say whether the pains are in relation to that.

Some ladies have very severe 'Prostin' pains with no appreciable cervical change.

Doesn't alter the fact that the pains are severe, pain relief should be given accordingly.

It will need a doctor to prescribe anything other than paracetamolif she is not in active labour.

I am very surprised she is being treated like this - if her bp was high this can hardly be helping. And I would have thoguht they need to monitor the baby too for a high BP induction. Maybe her birthing partner needs to get a bit high handed with someone and start to force things along a bit.

I was induced and had pains for a while, but it was fairly quick and dd was born 12 hours after the induction started, what your friend is going thro sounds dreadful.

Hope you get better news soon

It does sound quite normal, if they are busy on the labour wards they will not break her waters unless Mum or baby in danger - breaking waters brings a very small risk of prolapsed cord and needing an energency c-section!!!!

I suffer quite badly from prostagladin pain but unfortunately never really got the pain relief I needed to cope with them although I found a tens ver good.

Sorry to hear she is having such a horrid experience.

I had this i had 3 weeks of contractions for 5 hours of an afternoon from wk 38. When i saw the doctor at 41 wks i was only 1 cm dilated.

I was induced the next day, but had to wait on the ward had to be at the hospital for 8am was finaly taken down to the delivery suite at 2pm when it became available.

They broke my waters then i was given the drip as my labour just wasn't progressing.
