Post partum bleeding

I gave birth 8 days ago, and the lochia has decreased significantly from the first couple or days. Pinkish and watery to a slight brown colour. Just now however I went to the bathroom and my sanitary towel was full or fresh red blood with a huge clot (almost the size of the extra large pad). It's left me a little shocked and worried, as I was told bleeding which increases after it has lessened would be a sign of infection. I don't have a fever or sharp abdominal pains or any other worrying symptom.

I will monitor overnight and ring GP in the morning if it continues. But has anyone else experienced similar?

This tends to be quite normal, especially if you have pushed your body more and more the last few days. I'm 8 weeks post partum and still bleeding.

In all honesty I've been taking it quite easy and have not pushed myself at all post birth. I was just really alarmed as my ST was fully saturated (worn for around 3 hours) and the clot was huge - almost the entire length of ST.

Since then flow has been minimal, I've been checking almost hourly as I am up with baby anyway.

I do hope you are right and it is normal. I read occasionally the placental site scab comes away and can cause a gush of blood so could possibly be that.

Are you still under the care of your midwife? I think I was told to tell them if I noticed any clots bigger than a 50 pence piece so it sounds like you should seek advice. As for the bleeding generally - mine finally stopped around the 8 week mark but was pretty heavy for the first 6 weeks.

Ding123 · 12/11/2020 05:02

I'm not too sure @Goatsdorhone. Baby had his day 5 check with them and they seemed happy with us both, took back the hospital notes and didn't really say whom to contact if I had any issues.

I'd maybe check with your midwife or GP regarding the clot but in general I found post partum bleeding very stop/start. It would all but disappear then suddenly bright red, fairly heavy flow for a couple of days, then tail off again etc. Mine finally went at 6 weeks pp. Just be warned if you think it's gone and you go out somewhere- take some sanpro because it may not actually be over!

I would contact your midwife to discuss the clot. The bleeding on and off its absolutely normal but just check RE a clot that size.

Passing a large clot is definitely a reason to seek medical advice. Please call your widwide OP.

Thank you for the replies. I spoke to my GP this morning who said it should be nothing to worry about as long as I'm not showing any signs of infection or PPH. She advised i ring the mw for a second opinion if I felt unsure...so I did and she also said the same thing, to keep a close eye on it and if I feel in well to go in and get checked by the obstetrician.

I' feel fine, I've not had any clots since. In fact I've had no bleeding since! It seems I got rid of all my remaining lochia all in one go Confused
