Unsuccessful sweep

lockdownpregnancy · 19/09/2020 16:43

Hi all. 38+6 and had a sweep today as I've got hypertension. Whilst they don't want to induce me just yet they want to help things along.
The MW who did it really hurt me and it ended up being a failed sweep. She said she couldn't get to my membrane, she just got the tips of her fingers to it but couldn't actually go that far 'up' to sweep me.
She said my cervix is still long and high.
Even though my sweep didnt work I now have excruciating period cramps!
From what I've read on here that's normal, if the sweep is successful but is it, if it failed?
I feel massively bruised and slightly battered. By how she had her hand up there I'm not surprised but just want to get some info of you lovelies that have had it done
TIA

Hi @lockdownpregnancy. How are you getting on? Unsuccessful sweeps can be so disappointing. Hope your cramping has eased (or turned into labour for you!)
X

Hi @Grumpy19 funnily enough my waters went yesterday so spent the majority of the day in hospital and as nothing has happened I was back in hospital at 5am this morning and they have induced me so just a waiting game now!
Due to this fucking pandemic I'm alone. My poor DH is shoved in a corridor somewhere and has booked himself into the travel lodge down the road so he has somewhere to go whilst he waits for me to go into established labour. I just hope it doesn't take 24 hours like the MW said it would! So upset. All I've done is cry!

I was similar in that I had a failed sweep and was then induced - I really feel for you being on your own, it's horrible. I was induced Monday morning and husband couldn't come in until Wednesday afternoon when things started happening (please don't panic thinking it'll be that long - everyone is different and it may well be much quicker for you) and it was horrible. My advise is to top up your mobile data and use FaceTime/WhatsApp (other video calling apps are available 😂) and keep in touch as much as possible that way - really helpful for both of us when he couldn't physically be with me.

Thinking of you xxx

Grumpy19 · 21/09/2020 07:18

Ahh. That's crap you are alone. I was induced last time and things started within a few hours so fingers crossed for you.
If you have the energy, keep active to help get things moving. Good luck. You'll have a beautiful baby soon xx

Thank you @theinbetweeners & @Grumpy19
It's been 4 hours and managed to get an hours sleep which is good but I've got a banging headache so just waiting for that to pass!
I'll try and wander around as I have been told it does help (FTM so no clue!)
I haven't had any contractions yet but I am getting a lot of aching low down so all being well things will start to move along 🤞

If you can access a shower, try a nice warm shower and yes lots of walking - even if it doesn't actually help it'll help reduce the worrying and overthinking that when still - did for me anyway 🙂🙂
stairgates · 21/09/2020 09:19

Good luck!! It does soundlike things are slowly happening :) When are they back to check you for progress did they say? :)

lockdownpregnancy · 21/09/2020 11:38

@stairgates they said they give me another internal for 24 hours!!! However if I start having regular contractions then they will.
They have started to ramp up a bit, but nothing mega just yet.
Fingers crossed I have my baby in my arms by the end of the day! I'll be pissed off if I have to go overnight but you can't rush these things! He will come out when he's ready!

I really don’t understand why they insist on trying to perform sweeps on women who clearly aren’t ready.

Hope things progress smoothly for you.

linerforlife · 21/09/2020 11:43

Have you told the midwives you have a bad headache? It's a concern with high blood pressure. I hope things start up for you soon and you have your lovely baby in your arms today Smile

lockdownpregnancy · 21/09/2020 14:05

@linerforlife thank you! Yes I've told them but the paracetamol has helped though not got rid of it completely. Plus the BP tablets I'm on has brought my BP down to within a reasonable range so they aren't too concerned.
I've tried to sleep but baby is so low down the pressure is unreal and I can't get comfortable in any position to sleep! 😫
Plus my contractions are very slowly kicking in so if I try and doze off it doesn't work!
I really hope he comes tonight so I can get at least a few hours sleep afterwards! If I go through until tomorrow I don't know how I'll have the energy to get him out!!

Grumpy19 · 23/09/2020 10:14

Hi @lockdownpregnancy just wondering how you are getting on. Hopefully you have your baby in your arms now x

lockdownpregnancy · 23/09/2020 14:21

@Grumpy19 my beautiful, perfect baby boy arrived via C Section at 10.41pm last night.
Everything started off so well yesterday morning but all went down hill in the afternoon so ended up screaming at my midwife to 'cut him out'
I was totally right as he wasn't in the right position, he was back to back with his head on a wonk so I wasn't dilating properly, so if I hadn't have demanded one I would of ended up having one later on anyway and the process would have been even more dragged out!
It was me that suffered not my baby thankfully but all's well that ends well and I have my perfect little bundle now in my arms 💙💙💙

Aww, congratulations !!!

Grumpy19 · 23/09/2020 14:50

Congratulations! So glad he is here safely. Sorry to hear it was so dramatic though. Wishing you a speedy recovery x

lockdownpregnancy · 23/09/2020 18:55

Thank you ladies! Not what I'd hoped for with the labour but it was what it was! He's here and we are both well which is the main thing!
Good luck to all of you who are due soon! 🥰
