Just saw this www.facebook.com/mossthedoula - I thought it was satire. Isn't it about time David Brent / Ricky Gervais or French and Saunders or someone like that did a take on being a Trans & Queer Centered Full-Spectrum Doula & Childbirth Educator? Sorry if I have started this thread in the wrong place.

I’m as GC as they come but I can’t get upset about this... if there’s a gap in the market, why not? Far better to have a specialist MW/Doula who’s familiar with what language to use/not use etc than to have to force all midwives to re-learn all their training to be “gender neutral”. You get MWs who specialise in teen pregnancies, why not one for transmen as well?

gamerchick · 20/08/2020 00:57

Is that the chestfeeding, body feeding doula?

Sounds like a hardcore zombie fan.

McTav · 20/08/2020 01:05

If the service helps people, why not?

Tatatan · 20/08/2020 13:35

Ok, so I'm a bloke and a dad. I can't get used to the idea that a man can be pregnant. So a Doula (great important job) for a pregnant man is an oxymoron. I'm with JKR that transpeople should live as they like, but they cannot change sex. Ergo a man cannot get pregnant. So the idea of a Doula for a pregnant (trans)man is just an utterly misconceived idea (imo).

Why ever not? Surely if you ARE a trans man (ie a woman who wants to be treated like a man) then during labour it would be helpful to be attended by someone who understands that?

KeyboardMash · 20/08/2020 13:58

It's only an oxymoron if the two things are mutually exclusive. Things are not mutually exclusive just because you "can't get used to the idea". I'm with Angelo - makes sense for transmen to be attended by someone who specialises in this.

Well it is obviously a service you don't want or need, do you think that means no one needs it? The world revolves round you presumably. It's actually the person giving birth who matters, if it helps them then that is great and nothing to do with you.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 20/08/2020 14:36

I don't understand many things other people do for instance, getting waxed, or tanning beds...

Does that mean I think all of those businesses should be shut or mocked?

No, because I understand that different people have different needs and wants and different things that make them comfortable.

What are you hoping for from this thread?

Tatatan · 20/08/2020 16:34

RE "DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult What are you hoping for from this thread?" - testing the water, I think. I won't comment any more on this thread and thanks all for the interesting responses.

Tatatan · 20/08/2020 16:38

a quick PS re "testing the water", I mean, Mumsnet has been abandoned by Flora Margarine for alleged transphobia - so it is heartening, in a way, to see many responses telling me that I'm perhaps out of order to suggest a humorous take on the Doula above. I wish someone would tell Flora that Mumsnet has quite a few transgender sympathisers and they should reinstate their sponsorship.

You didn't, you were just rude.

Etinox · 20/08/2020 17:39

I’m definitely GC and probably on the wrong side of history irt Male bodied people in women’s spaces but this is fine.

MangoFeverDream · 27/08/2020 07:37

I just find it kind of hilarious but it’s true that better to have someone ‘specialise’ in this nonsense than force people to comply with things they don’t believe in.
