If I give birth in the night..

if I give birth in the night, say between 9pm-6am in between those times, would I have to go to post natal or can you get discharged from delivery anytime if all is well?

I gave birth at midnight with my third, discharged at 6am.
In fact I’ve never made it to the postnatal ward with all three of mine... 6 hour discharge from the delivery suite with all of them.

It was fab as we got home just as my 2 older DC were getting up. I even took them to school that morning with the baby in tow

I'm due my 3rd anytime now and would love (all being well), to be discharged before kids wake up if that happens and surprise them in the morning. My youngest is so excited x

Good luck! It really was fab seeing their faces when they got up in the morning. I hadn’t gone in to labour until they were already in bed the night before so it was a big surprise for them.

I was discharged 3 hours after delivery at 6am in the morning. Got back in time to get the eldest son's lunchbox made and pack him off to school

It depends on the policy of the hospital. I'm in north London, gave birth Tuesday 10am, discharged Wednesday lunchtime after pushing really hard for it (or would've been Wednesday late afternoon or Thursday lunchtime). It's because the hospital only had one person doing the various checks on the baby before discharge. Also, if you have an epidural, that will slow things down further.

This made me smile Your DC are going to think babies just randomly appear overnight, so cute! and boy, are they in for a surprise

I had ds at 7.20pm and was sent home at around 1am.

I had dd at 8:40pm and was discharged at 2am. They were really full though, so pushing every one out of the door!! It was a midwife led unit so no doctor Checks which may have sped things up too

Is it your first baby? When I had mine they wanted me to stay in a full day to establish breast feeding with support but in these Covid days I'd imagine they'd want you up and out ASAP

Technically yes.
However, I had my 2nd at 4.20am and a combination of an usually busy night and a staff shortage meant that I had to be moved to a post-natal ward at 7am where time (and paperwork) stood still.
Eventually left at 6pm.

Because of my experience of overnights the first time though, I was still happy.
So my advice is: if it's what you want then request it straight away. Obviously circumstances change but if all is straight forward then it's better to say at the outset.

Go for a homebirth if your other 2 have been straightforward
My Gp suggested it to me for my 3rd as I have very fast labours and we live rurally ( like would not make it to the hospital in time)
It was fab, gave birth overnight and the older slept through It and woke up to mum and new baby in bed. So stress free, no need for someone to look after them etc etc.

My 3rd was born at 1am and I was home before 6am. I think they're a lot more lenient when it's not your first. I'd wanted the same as you, in and out while the older two were in bed, and it worked out perfectly. Good luck!
