Hi! I’m 31+3 and baby boy has gastroschisis (intestines growing outside his body). He’ll need an op after he’s born, and I have huge anxiety due to not knowing the severity until he arrives. Are elective C-sections going ahead?

Does anyone have experience of Birmingham Women’s Hospital? What is the NICU like or NICU in general?

Thank you 🥰

I don’t have any personal experience but did you watch Life and Birth on BBC1 a while ago? That was all filmed at Birmingham Women’s Hospital and featured babies on NICU etc. Might be worth a watch if you haven’t seen it!

Wishing you all the best with your baby 💐💕

I didn’t give birth at BWH but my son was transferred to NICU shortly after birth. I have nothing but praise for the team there. They were all amazing. He was very very ooorly and they weren’t sure he’d survive, he had 2 nurses caring for him 24hrs a day. There were 3 other babies in his room so altogether 8 staff. I can’t fault anything. They respected that I wanted to do as much as possible for my son and even if I wasn’t there they’d call me for nappy changes. Although it was overwhelming having such a poorly baby, not at one point did I panic (even when they called me in the middle of the night to say he wasn’t doing well and to come down (we stayed in the flats behind the hospital) and that was completely down to the doctors and nurses there. Even the lady on reception played a part in our journey as she let my older children ‘help’ her and kept them occupied when things weren’t always going to plan. We have a healthy 6 year old and it’s definitely down to the care he received while in BWH 😍
