Since giving birth nearly 5 weeks ago now I've had quite bad back ache, I did have the epidural and have heard the epidural can cause back ache in the future so I'm guessing it's from that ?

There is no evidence to show that epidurals increase the risk of long term back ache. There have been studies looking into this and there is no link between having an epidural and chronic back pain - the rate is similar in women who had and did not have an epidural in labour.

Please do see your GP if you are concerned or any of the red flag symptoms mentioned in this article www.nhs.uk/conditions/back-pain/

I had an epidural and had backache for a few weeks afterwards, but the doctor and physio thought it was swelling/inflammation as I had to have so many injections in my back (I have a curved spine and it was hard to site the epidural). The pain was awful, but relieved with ibuprofen (probably because it was inflammation/swelling, which ibuprofen helps with) and subsided after 3 or 4 weeks.

Could you have something like this?

If not, my backache during pregnancy was relieved by a good pregnancy pillow and an amazing osteopath (not sure you'd be able to access one at the moment). Maybe try a few things and see how it goes?

I agree with pp that there is no evidence of long-term back pain after epidurals (when I was in lots of pain I read A LOT of studies convinced they were wrong Grin).

Good luck, I hope you find something that helps soon (or even better, that it goes away on its own).

Yeah the pain isn't always there it's when i move in i certain ways. The pain is more at the bottom of my back. It could just be from the way I sit to be honest but it's at the bottom of my back which I've not had before.
