Does being engaged mean the baby's coming soon?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but none of my pregnancy books seem to say. I'm 36 wks and the midwife told me today that the baby is 2/5 engaged. She didn't seem that bothered about it but a few people I've told since have basically told me that means the baby's probably going to be early.

Any advice/thoughts?

It's my 1st baby BTW (in case you couldn't guess from the stupid question

no it doesn't mean the baby is coming right now but it does mean the baby is getting ready. With my first DS he engaged at 33 wks and my second at 34 wks both were born on their due date

missbumpy · 17/09/2007 21:58

Thanks! Good to know it's on its way but also good to know I've got a few weeks to get ready

My first was engaged at 35 weeks and arrived on due date too, so i wouldnt worry too much, altho the MW never said how far engaged.

kaa0901 · 18/09/2007 16:50

my baby's head has been engaged 5/5 for about 10days and there's still no sign of him

Depends if you believe in sex before marriage I think

WriggleJiggle · 18/09/2007 21:06

Mine was engaged for weeks before finally showing up.

coleyboy · 18/09/2007 21:13

Some babies never fully engage, and some engage early, but arrive late.

As they say 'baby will come when baby is ready'

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 18/09/2007 21:21

my first baby was engaged at 32 weeks, arrived 8 days early (so 38+6), ds didnt engage till labour, 8 days early at 38+6!

cheritongirl · 19/09/2007 15:16

i was 2/5 engaged at 36 weeks but gave birth a 42+1 so wasn't an indicator of imminent labour! all the best with your

missbumpy · 19/09/2007 16:31

Oh, I'm 2/5 at 36 weeks too I really hope I don't go too far overdue. I'm starting to feel really tired and uncomfortable and I can feel the baby's head pressing on my cervix when I walk. I don't think I can face another 5 or 6 weeks of this!

I also just had my 36 wk appointment and was told the baby is 4/5 engaged and to be ready from 38 wks. It's my 2nd and I think I will be happy if he comes early.

missbumpy · 19/09/2007 19:11

Really Hillbilly? Congratulations! They told you to be ready from 38 weeks because you're 4/5 engaged or is that just general advice to everyone? I guess you're more likely to be early because it's your second. Everyone keeps on telling me to expect mine to be late because it's my first.
Good luck

my lo was 3/5 at 35 weeks, the next week she was breech, now she's apparntly 3/5 and i'm 38 weeks! so don't know the answer to your question but wish this one would hurry up too!

missbumpy · 19/09/2007 19:31

Blimey J20! I thought that once they were engaged they were pretty much stuck in that position and couldn't get themselves into a breech position. Just goes to show how little I know!

Good luck, I hope you don't have too long to wait

so did i!!

although it was the GP that decided lo was breech so it could have been wrong, think she's just bony!

JodieG1 · 19/09/2007 20:09

Mine have been 3/5 engaged from early on, around 34 weeks but kept bobbing up and down. A couple of weeks after that his head was free so doesn't really mean anything.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 19/09/2007 20:21

My first baby was engaged early on and was 2 weeks early. This baby was engaged 3/5 at 35 weeks but not at 37 it seems. (I think they have more space to move about in subsequent pregnancies.) I can't remember in other pregnancies.
