Induction your stories please

Pref good!

Had a sweep on the Tuesday, but booked in for an induction on the Saturday. Had a show on Friday and v mild contractions.
Went to hosp Saturday morning was told I was possibly dilated enough for them to break my waters. That MW went off duty & next one said "no way".
Finally went into induction suite at 9pm with more established labour pains. Was given the pessary at midnight & sent back to the ward.
More progressed contractions but not serious, Took codiene & went to sleep. Woken at 6am for checks & monitor. Told I was 2cm dilated & taken to delivery suite.
8am v serious contractions, v painful. Gas & air just about touching it. Was measured at 6cm dilated with strong urge top push.#
Was advised by Dr I was 'coming on too fast (story of my life) and recommended epidural.
Had epidural at 9am.
Fell asleep, dozed through most of labour. Woken up at about 12:45pm to push, Ds born at 13:04

First induction I had the gel and was in labour from about 12pm to 10pm normal labour all went well no inteference

second induction had my waters broke at 10am started with mild contractions by 12pm they were in full flow was having gas and air and at 1pm requested Diamorphine by 1.40pm I had had her

Right,

I was induced as ds was late (11 days in the end) I was given the pessary on thur (10/11 at night?) then told to walk around for an hour, my waters broke at 3am fri morn. MIld pains followed. I was put on the drip at 7am (not sure why as pains were getting stronger) I had g & A but didn't cope with the pains as the were very strong. Had pethadine and was quite sick. Things not going well, I was non communicative so dh had to agree to epidural. Once that was in and working all was fantastic. Fully dilated at around 2am sat morn and was given 1/2 hr rest before pushing stage (I think this was a double edged sword as I'm sure she had another lady about to deliver)
Began pushing and then told to stop. Mw went out of room and came back with about 7-8 others. Not told why but dr for me, one for baby each had their own assistant person. Had ventouse and ds was delivered at 4.05am sat morning 9Lb 1oz.
I b/f straight away and he also had abottle of formula as I was too exhausted to feed. This did not impact on b/f at all.

Was a little shocked and battered and brusied and not really sure of what had happened. I did find out 2 weeks ago (am prgt with ds2) that the end bit was hairy as ds was in distress -hence the ventouse- but no one told me.

I may be induced again with ds 2 and are quite happy about it. I know this time round I don't want G&A or pethadine and will just go straight to the epidural. I will also ask far more questions and expect to be consulted in any decision making.

I posted on the 'Birth Plan' thread regarding emergencies and intervention and felt it may have signifigance for you.
Didn't mean it to sound cryptic.

I needed to be induced when having Dd as i was very ill.
They gave me an internal to see what i would need, gel etc.

They discovered that i was 3cms dialated, and broke my waters, Dd was born 2 hours later!

Went into hospital with ds to have waters broken. Contractions kicked in within about 15 minutes at around 10:30 - quite painful going from nothing to full on contractions! Got into delivery suite within about 1 hour and into the bath which helped. Got rigged up to monitoring equipment and told I wouldn't be able to go back in the bath. (I believe it is possible to have intermittent monitoring, but you might want to ask about this.) Got urge to push at around 15h and told not to. Offered pethidrine to slow labour down which I refused and opted for epidural instead. Had epidural at around 16h which made me very, very shivery, but was nice not to be able to feel the contractions. Examined afterwards and found to be 9cm dilated so not sure I should have really been offered the epidural, but never mind. 1.5 hours later, the epidural started to wear off just in time for the real pushing bit. They were going to use a ventouse and did an episiotomy, but ds came out withotu any further intervention at 18:05.

About 8 hours from start to finish. Not a bad experience, but wish I hadn't had the epidural as I reckon ds would have come out sooner...

I've been in early labour since wed i'm 2cms and have had my show and have had a sweep again. So might still happen tonight but if not booked for tomorrow.

Was a little confused by the debrief thing!

I didn't have a debrief after BUT I did go through my labour notes with my consultant a couple of weeks ago as I am big again with this lo.

I would reccomend to anyone having a slightly 'this is not what I'd planned/imagined' type of birth to ask as many questions afterwards as this can play on your mind for months afterwards (it did me)

missyhols, you'll probably find that this is described as a 'long latent phase'

In other words, not in established labour, doesn't mean you are not in pain, but it can be very disheartening.

At least you are booked for induction so delivery is in view.

For some ladies the latent phase can seem to last forever.

Yeah long is def the word. Feel better knowing that in morn I'll have end in sight. I've managed to arrange my dd to be looked after etc so feel quite at ease at mo

I think that means you'll be given the pessary/gel as I believe they will only break your waters if you are at least 3 cm dilated, iirc.

Well muppetgirl, at least on this site you can ask as many questions as you need, there are no time constrictions.

I'm a midwife with many years experience who now finds herself free of the NHS, so ask away.

Actually, the other really good thing about having an induction is that you know when it's going to be and can make arrangements accordingly. My biggest fear with this one is that it will come during the day and dh won't make it home from work in time!!

My labour with dd went on for 22 hours so any improvement will be appreciated

I've been induced with 2 of 3 labours, both very different from each other but both good in their own way.

DS1 induced day early as he wa getting big - had sweep 2 days before an was 2cm fo that. was 4cm on day so just had waters broken. Had epiural as cntractions started so completely painfree birth that lasted 8 hours. A really calm ad cntrolled birth

DS2 induced on due date due to size. Nothing happening so had the gel. Didn't do much so had waters broken - 1.30 later he was born. No time for anything part from gasand air. Hell while it lasted but looking back best of 3 labours as no time to get tired and was able to go home 4hrs later. (had lunch in a rstaurant in town and fish and chips at home for tea!)

My DD took 22 hours too - both inductions were fantastic compared with that.

Sorry muppetgirl, it's in the Childbirth. Birth plans are they any good?

or more precisely ' do you think they're a good idea'

I think it's good to at least think about what will happen v. what you would like to happen. I also think it's good to keep an open mind which is what I thought would be a good idea with ds1. This time round I have been a little more specific due to previous experience and will insist on being consulted before interventions -subject to circumstances dicatating.
