Bleeding during labour

I bled a lot during the birth of DC1. I was having him in midwife unit but due to loss of blood was rushed to hospital. Lost about 2 pints I think.

I’m now pregnant with DC2 and terrified that the same thing will happen again. What worries me more is I haven’t been given any explanation as to why it happened. The placenta hadn’t separated from uterus or anything and it stopped as soon as DC was born.

Does anyone know any other reason for the haemorrhage? Or how concerned I need to be about it happening again?

Also I have a very low BMI. Would that mean I’m more likely to suffer serious complications if I had a big bleed again?

Hi, have you asked your current midwife? I had bleeding too during labour and lost about a pint. Afterwards I was just so relieved the baby was here and then had breast feeding issues I just forgot to ask.

My placenta hadn't abrupted and it has always been a mystery to me why I was bleeding. I haven't heard of that happening to any friends or family. I put it down to my age and the placenta deteriorating.

Pregnant again now and booking in next week. I have a tone of questions but if I get chance and she asks about labour I will ask.

Ask you midwife or maternity unit how to access your notes from your previous birth if you haven't already done so. A few of my friends have done this and I plan to do so if we have another one even though I had a relatively straight forward birth. You can then book an appointment with someone who will talk you through everything that happened and hopefully answer all of your questions about the likelihood of it happening again.

I had a haemorrhage before going into labour with my oldest - it wasn't a show, it was a full on feeling like I'd wet myself and a puddle of blood on the kitchen floor.

A few hours later my waters broke and the bleeding subsided but I bled again as soon as he was born.

The second time I bled after the placenta was delivered but with the other three I was completely fine.

So I just saw my midwife and she says it can be quite normal in a fast labour when you dilate quickly which I did then bleeding can happen

I have low platelets and haemorrhaged with my first. I never did with my other 2 children. My consultant at the time said if was very unlikely to happen again.
