...please explain gas and air to me?

I had a cervical exam a couple of days ago when I threatened to go into preterm labour. My cervix was very high, and it was very painful the first time the Dr tried so I was given gas and air for it.

With the g&a, I felt the pressure of what he was doing, but absolutely no pain at all. However, I was aware first of my forehead furrowing, then that I was shouting out (as if in pain) in time with the pressure. I was sooooo woozy and far away from it all; when I 'woke up' a few moments after he had finished, I asked the nurse if that was really my voice, and she commented that even with the gas and air I was obviously in an extreme amount of pain.

I really wasn't feeling any pain at all, just the pressure....can anyone explain the physiology of why was I screaming?

Hi! I can't explain the ins and outs of gas and air and I apologise but this did make me giggle a little :)
I have used gas and air in both labours and also when I was having a wound packed (not pregnancy related) and have also witnessed patients using while at work (nurse) from my experience I felt like it took me miles away from the pin but could still feel, personally I got to a stage in labour where it didn't work at all and I could feel pain most definitely! It gives you a "drunk" feeling, so this is possibly why you can't temper much and also alters your voice x

I love gas and air!! My 3rd birth was the best, I kept floating in and out of the lake 3 and strictly come dancing 😂 I was also screaming in my little high.

No idea how it works but I wish I could buy some 😂

When they broke my waters I had gas and air and my hearing went like I was under water and with my eyes closed all I could see was this bright orange light then kind of came round 30secs later, felt very trippy and not what I'd expected Smileended up with a section so that was my only time using it
