How long did your 2nd labour last?

Hi, guys!
I’m currently 38 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and all I can think about now is the birth. Each day I’m waking up wondering if today will be the day. Feeling nervous and excited!
I have a 2.8 old son - I was in early labour for quite a long time (first twinge was a Sunday around 4pm and he was born the following Tuesday at 10:07am) things really sped up at the end once they broke my waters and he was born after 17 minutes of pushing. 6 hours after arriving at the hospital. All in all I had a really good experience, it went really smoothly with no worry. I know they say no 2 births are the same but I’m just interested in how it went for your 2nd (or 3rd, 4th and so on!)
Was it much quicker? More intense? Similar to your 1st?
Thank you 😊

36 hours first labour.
3 hours second.

Babdoc · 24/08/2019 08:46

I have no idea how long my second was. At 39+weeks I had terrible gastroenteritis - was doubled up with abdominal cramps, and hosing at both ends, all day.
At some point I realised that the abdo pains now seemed to be at regular 3 minute intervals...
DD2 arrived about 3 hours after getting to the labour suite, and was whisked off to NICU, more dead than alive, ventilated, convulsing, and not expected to survive. She’s now a feisty 28 year old!

Thank you for everyone’s replies.
Everyone is different but looking at all the replies it seems like for most people, labours speed up! I hope that’s the case with me!
But you just don’t know how it’s going to go, it could go anyway.
My midwife said that 2nd labours and so on tend to be faster as your body has done it all before etc.
I’ll go in and just go with the flow, like I did last time, whatever happens, happens.
Sounds weird but I’m actually quite excited about the birth - nervous but very excited!
Just looking forward to meeting our daughter now.
I will come back and update you all on how it goes!

Babdoc My god, that must have been terrifying! So glad it all turned out okay in the end. Scary.

Second was 1 hr 45 minutes from contractions starting to birth

happytoday73 · 24/08/2019 09:34

Over 30 to less than 4 (6 from first signs)

Good luck!

Eyebrows2016 · 24/08/2019 21:17

First was 6 hours, second 45 mins

Moncwf · 25/08/2019 12:58

1st was 20 hours with 1hr45 minutes pushing with eventual forceps.
2nd (induced) 3.5 hours, 8 minute second stage. He practically fell outShock

Very similar for me! My second stage for number 2 was 4 minutes 😱 ridiculous. He wasn’t induced but was 41+6 and due for an induction the next day.

WinterRose92 · 25/08/2019 19:59

Sexnotgender 4 minutes?! That’s got to be a record!! 😱

First born was 20+ hours.
Second born was minutes - born on my bathroom floor!

Sexnotgender · 26/08/2019 06:20

Haha, probably! It was the most intense experience of my life. But definitely preferable to the 36 hour shit show that was my first labour.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 26/08/2019 06:28

First was 30hrs of prelabour then induction and 7 more hours.

2nd was 7 hours from first contraction to birth, though I'd had 6 days of random, one off contractions!

3rd was 3 hours total. 4th was 6 hours (posterior).

Good luck op!

GizzardChops · 26/08/2019 13:26

My first was around 30hrs in total from waters breaking, but I had PROM so I wasn't really even in early/latent labour most of that time. Very irregular contractions started approximately 12hrs after waters broke. I was induced (drip) after just over 24hrs and then things were very speedy - 4.5hrs from drip to baby, with 1.5hrs of that being pushing.

Second was a little less than 6hrs from waters breaking, with a very quick pushing stage. Contractions started as soon as waters broke!

Crazymummyto3 · 07/09/2019 08:21

My first was 11.5 hours and second was 1 hour 40 mins and a lot more straightforward

allabouteve1 · 07/09/2019 08:47

5 hours with my first from first pain to holding baby.

2 hours 30 with my second from first pain to baby in arms.

1hour 15 with my third - didn't make it to hospital with that one.

BottomleyPottsSpots2 · 08/09/2019 15:30

1st - about 8 hours, induction, epidural. 2nd stage was 3 pushes long so about 10 minutes - 38 weeks?
2nd - whole labour 45 minutes, spontaneous. Second stage was one push. I didn't realise I was in labour, thought it was a kidney infection - 35 weeks.
3rd - whole labour about 90 minutes, induction (AROM) ... went for a 30 minute walk after AROM and monitoring, contractions started, came back and had him in 2 pushes - 36 weeks.
Wondering what the 4th will be like. Will hopefully find out in about 4 weeks!
