How many days do afterpains go on for?

My first 2 dcs were born by cs and I didn't notice afterpains with either of them. I wondered if maybe they'd been and gone before I got off the nice strong post-cs drugs?

I'm pg with no 3 and people say they are lots worse with your third!

Don't know about no 3 but with dd2 i had terrible afterpains ,they were like contractions and lasted on/off for about a week.

maisym · 06/07/2007 20:12

I had afterpains for the beginiing of each bf for the first few days - for 2 or 3 days. Awful with babys 3 & 4 - pain releif didn't help plus would nearly threw up with the contractions (worse than labour) so used visualization to get thorugh it.

Thanks, malsym, am now expecting Number 4 and had commpletely blocked out memory of the afterpains until I saw this thread.

I would say 2-3 days is about the right duration, but boy do they hurt more and more each time. Why can't non-Csection mums have some morphine, too?

Frizbe · 06/07/2007 20:36

Agree 2-3 days, athough I did have some awful ones about 7days after with dd2, I think it was something clicking back into place??? went after about 6hrs and MW wasn't too concerned....

your welcome ilkj

I'm having a baby soon and not worried about the labour just the aftrpains!!

fruitful · 07/07/2007 18:34

Hmm so I might get lucky and have them hidden by the drugs then. Or maybe I just didn't get them badly with 1 & 2...

ooooh- nobody told me about afterpains. Mine were awful almost as bad as labour itself.

suzi2 · 07/07/2007 21:48

With DS I thought they were bad. But boy, with DD they were awful! Definately worse than labour! It felt like a long time but I think mine were worst for about 4 or 5 days then got more bearable after that. I had one day when I had a sharp pain too and was doubled over, nearly got DH to call an ambulance. Reckon it was my uterus falling down or something!

expatinscotland · 07/07/2007 21:54

I didn't get them with DD1, but with DD2, YOUCH!

DITDOT · 08/07/2007 23:28

I had bad afterpains with dd2. Worse than the birth.

Co-codomol 30/500 worked wonders and are safe when breastfeeding

yelnats · 08/07/2007 23:31

I haven't noticed afterpains with either of my 2 dd's. was really worried about getting them after dd2 thought as so many people had said to expect them second time round.

sparklygothkat · 08/07/2007 23:32

I had forgetten about afterpains too.. With dd2 the pain was terrible. I thought I was having another baby Am pregnant with no4 and I know they are going to be bad..

lou33 · 08/07/2007 23:32

number 4 omg i thought i was in labour again

sorry

MrsWeasley · 08/07/2007 23:33

I have 4 DC and nevr had any afterpains with any of them!

MrsWeasley · 08/07/2007 23:34

unless you count my 12 year old now! LOL she can be a pain

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 08/07/2007 23:38

I found afterpains were a bugger with dd2. Bring your own paracetamols with you, otherwise you'll wait ages for the medicine trolly to come round. It only lasted for a couple of days
