How long after birth does it take for periods to return?

DS is 7 months and I just noticed some brown spotting. He is still breastfeeding multiple times a day and eating 3 meals (purees). I thought my periods wouldn't return so soon?

Depends. For some, it's 6 weeks after birth. For me, it was 2years 3 months, which was a month after month I stopped beast feeding.

I think for those breastfeeding, somewhere between 6 and 12 months is normal, once baby is going 4 or more hours between feeds but obviously there are outliers.

Mine came back four weeks to the day after DS was born Hmm

Friend who had her DS five weeks after mine (6 months ago now) still hasn't gotten a regular one.

So I don't think there's any rhyme or reason.

6 weeks after DD1. 9 months after DD3. Can't remember DD2.
All three were FF.

If you're breastfeeding you can expect it anytime after 6 months according to my gyn. Some women do get it earlier though. 7 months PP seems normal to me based on my friends experiences.

With both of my breastfed babies it came back at 8 months.

Mine came back at 4 months despite EBF. Think yourself lucky.

Mine returned at 4 months and I was ebf

Milliy · 23/01/2019 02:02

Mine returned at about 6 weeks with all my babies and all were fully breastfed for 3 years each.

I'm breastfeeding and my periods returned when my little one was 11 weeks old, back now to their usual pattern too.

I was not happy as everyone had told me as long as I breastfed they wouldn't come back!

15 months for DC1, ebf baby and then did BLW (still had lots of milk). Currently DC2 is 6 weeks...

TeddyIsaHe · 23/01/2019 03:33

Dd was ebf and nine came back 4 weeks on the dot. Wasn’t impressed!

brookshelley · 23/01/2019 08:08

Wow I feel lucky. DC1 period came back 14 months PP and DC2 is 13 months and I went on Mirena before it returned, still hasn't come. Both EBF.

sittingonthetallseat · 23/01/2019 08:11

As others say, it is different for everyone. Two ebf I know got their period within 6 weeks. Mine returned at around 16/18 months with each of mine.

HoustonBess · 23/01/2019 08:29

6 weeks and I was EBF. It was the last thing I needed!

TerriB1984 · 23/01/2019 10:40

It does seem to vary. Mine came back just short of a year even though I continued to BF until 21 months. I EBF for 6 months and then like a PP i did BLW so my DD was still having regular feeds. My best friends didn’t return until she had completely stopped feeding but I know somebody else whose came back after 4 months even though she was still EBF.
