Is it worth buying a perineal massage oil? If so, which one?
I am 34 weeks pregnant and getting a bit anxious now (it's my first)

Many thanks all!

You can just use any kind of water based lubricant or natural oil (olive oil, coconut oil etc). Don’t waste your money!

My midwife has suggested I do perineal massage but for some reason I feel a bit “icky” about it Confused

I bought oil from boots as it felt weird rubbing vegetable oil down there!! I also bought gloves a I agree feels icky - been ok so far though....

This is worth a read before you invest in any oils wisewomanwayofbirth.com/midwifes-guide-to-an-intact-perineum/

Thanks Proseccopanda, interesting read. There have been some studies which do support perineal massage as something which can be used to help reduce the chances of trauma, so I think I will give it a go!

I didn't do the massage. It was far too uncomfortable and weird, but I think some nurses/doctors may do it during labour
I did just rub a little oil down there while I oiled my belly up on the nights from about week 36onwards
I used homemade moisturiser with some olive, avocado, shea butter and vit e all melted together.
Although my labour was super fast I didn't actually tear. So don't know whether it helped or not.
Will be doing the same this pregnancy, although I think tearing is also a very genetical thing as much as luck.

I used almond oil. Did perineal massage nightly from 34 weeks, no tears. But also had a really slow delivery of the head so who knows...however personally thought it was worth trying
