How long did it go on for you?

38+4 with my second baby. I have had awful lower backache and a sore achey belly since 1am last night. Have spoken to the midwife and she thinks this is pre-labour. I am so uncomfortable and wondering if the end is in sight?

Did any of you have these symptoms and if so, how long did it go on for?

I had a relatively long pre-labour - se symptoms below:

4 p.m. Sunday - start having contractions (period like pains) at 4 minute intervals

1 a.m. Monday - at hospital - 2 cm dilated (contractions at 3/4 minute intervals - 30 seconds long)

4 a.m. Monday - as above, turfed out as not progressed to 3 cms

10 a.m. Monday - contractions far more intense, unable to speak through them, 5 cm dilated

10 p.m. Monday - delivery at last!

dejags · 01/09/2004 16:36

thanks MTS.

nothing happening here which is regular, so I haven't even got as far as you were at 4pm Sunday

Presume by your nickname that this was your first baby?

Yes my one and only . Apparently I felt the prelabour very intensely as DS was back to back with his head on my cervix, so you may all of a sudden go into knocked off your feet by contractions stage of established labour! a girl in my baby masssage class apparently went to her 39 week check up to be told she was 4.5 cm dilated - she had had barely a twinge

dejags · 01/09/2004 17:23

MTS - snap, this baby is back-to-back too. It sometimes feels as if he is trying to break out , ah the joys....

23 Feb - show
27 Feb - waters broke
5 March - about 8pm, mild backache & period pains followed by stronger pains from about 1am
7am - contractions every 7 mins or so and advised to attend hosp due to previous water break
7 March - about 10pm went to delivery suite
8 March - about 8am - started pushing
8 March - 12noon - taken to theatre for forceps/cs
12.30pm - dd born

Piffleoffagus · 01/09/2004 17:28

Hmm I had back ache false alarm labour type thing 5 days before dd was born, it was her turning from posterior...
Went into labour at 5am, well thats when it woke me up, went to hospital and had dd at 6.27

Also had quick labour with ds he was my first, period pains at 11am, bit sore by 2.45pm delivered at 3.30pm
Yes I know I am lucky...

maretta · 01/09/2004 17:31

I'm the opposite - although not record breaking quick.
6pm show
8pm first contractions
12.45 pushing
12.50 waters break
1am baby
Had no pre labour at all that I felt. I was 8cms when I arrived at hospital.

PicadillyCircus · 01/09/2004 17:35

I had no pre labour feelings at all.

Waters broke 6:30am Friday
Niggles throughout the day.
Contractions started 6:45pm
Painful by 8:45pm, was 3cm dilated so got diamorphine!
Fully dilated by 1am.
Pushed and pushed
DS delivered by forceps at 2:50am

KateandtheGirls · 01/09/2004 17:36

jampot, I'm surprised you went so long with your waters broken. Did your doctor want to induce you? How many weeks were you at the time?

My water broke at 35w5d with my first daughter. A little over 24 hours later there were no signs of contractions or anything (to their surprise) and I was induced. She was born using foreps 40 hours after my water had broken. My temperature was starting to rise indicating a possible infection which is why forceps were used. If it had taken any longer they would have done an emergency c/s.

I always heard that they want you to be delivered within 48 hours of your water being broken to minimise the risk of infection.

2nd daughter. Water broke at 3:30pm. Contractions started at 5:30. By 6:30 they were 3 minutes apart. She was born at 10:20. So, no, I have never had one of those days-long labours.

golds · 01/09/2004 17:42

No pre-labour pains here either

dd - started having contractions which came on thick and fast at 5pm, dd born at 7pm

ds - started at 8.30am, ds born at 1.30pm

I hope you don't have to wait too long, good luck

jampot · 01/09/2004 18:19

K&TG - I was 37+5 when my waters broke but they scanned me 2 days later just to confirm they had gone and told me baby was quite big and they didn't want to induce because of the risk of her getting stuck! She was born at 39weeks. She was 8lb 9.5oz so not enormous but she obviously didn';t want to come go the normal route

sweetkitty · 01/09/2004 18:21

6.30pm waters break

Hi Dejags
I feel like I've been having pre-labour signs for a couple of weeks - period-like pains/diarrohea/nausea/tight bump. Nothing yet though - am hoping some of the work is being done in advance.
How are you feeling now? x

dejags · 01/09/2004 20:27

hi Dinny,

don't feel too bad - very tired (never a good thing). Was feeling awful until I ate my tea, since then feel a bit better (I do love my food ).

Tuesday 3pm - waters broke but dribbled so mid-wife wasn't convinced they had gone!
Tuesday 10pm - had a show
Wednesday 2pm - regular mid-wide checkup - no dilation
Wednesday 1am - regular contractions - about 5 mins apart - easy for breathe through and very much a 'back labour'
Wednesday 6am - contractions stop

So all pre labour....

Thursday 4pm - go to hospital to check that water have actually broken, monitored and having mild contractions but couldn't feel them
Thursday - 11:30pm induced with pessary
Friday - 2am - regular contractions, need TENS and just paced around the room in hospital
Friday - 9am - get sent for a bath but need to push - midwife check shows 9.5cm dilation
Friday - 9:30am - off to delivery suite for pushing - no time for drugs!!
Friday 12noon - dd born with a bit of last minute help from the ventouse!

kbaby · 06/09/2004 12:52

The only prelabour sign I had was lots of greeny discharge a week before.

11.00 backache
12.00 Contractions started every 5-10 mins
14.00 Bath and contractions every 3 mins
14.05 left for hospital
9cms dilated upon arrival at hospital
15.00 Started pushing
15.26 baby born.

All happened very quick considering it was my first and i was expecting 12 hrs of labour and surprisingly not as painful as I thought. I could talk through all my contractions and the worst bit was the baby crowning and pushing the head out.
All the best

NomDePlume · 06/09/2004 12:57

My labour was very short and intense. I was 37+4 when DD was born.

11.30pm - Woke needing the loo, waters then broke bringing on very painful and very close contractions.

12.00am - Arrived at hospital, 3cm dilated & contractions relentless.

2.10am - Fully dilated, started pushing.

2.31am - 7lb 1oz DD was born !

No time for pain relief, or chance to 'catch my breath' between contractions. 3 hours 1 min from start to finish, not bad for a first !

NomDePlume · 06/09/2004 12:58

P.S. Forgot to mention that my show happened about 3 days before the birth. Best of luck with your labour

NomDePlume · 06/09/2004 12:59

LOL !!! Have just seen that your baby has been born . Congrats !
